Population Growth in Philadelphia and Other Urban Centers

The United States Census Bureau recently published 2012 population estimates that show incremental growth in many urban centers, including Philadelphia, which saw a 1.4% population increase from April 2010 to July 2012. The estimated population change in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington region totaled 21,326 individuals during this same time period. This statistic can be broken down into the natural increase accounting for 20,430 individuals and net migration of 1,179 people.

While the jury is still out on how much the city will continue to grow and how this renewed interest in urban living will shape Philadelphia’s future, one can be pretty certain that it will impact the regional economy.  Between 2010 and 2011 there was a 2.7% increase in private, non-farm employment in Philadelphia County bringing the total private, non-farm employment to nearly 586,000 individuals. It will be interesting to see how these numbers shift as the number of Philadelphia residents expands.
