Temple University’s Fox School of Business this week debuted a new massive open online course (MOOC), designed in part to let prospective students considering an MBA at the Philadelphia metro school get a taste of what it’s like before enrolling.
Called “Quantitative Methods for Business,” the free online course is taught by Fox Associate Professor Darin Kapanjie, who is also the managing director of Fox Online and Digital Learning and academic director of the Fox Online MBA and BBA programs. The four-week course, which began yesterday, is delivered via a free, flexible teaching and learning platform from Blackboard.
“This graduate course will offer a broad foundation in quantitative methods so that anyone interested in business, from seasoned managers to aspiring entrepreneurs, can sharpen their skills,” Kapanjie said in a July statement announcing the new MOOC. But it’s not for the casually curious, he cautioned. “Students will engage in weekly class activities through WebEx, collaborate on group projects, and complete assignments just as if they were enrolled in the Online MBA program.”
WebEx web-conferencing technology will allow participating students to access course activities on demand, 24 hours a day. The mobile-friendly formal also makes it possible for students to collaborate with faculty and classmates.
“If people are going to try out a course to really let them know they have what it takes to be in a rigorous, highly ranked, well-respected MBA program, we want to provide every opportunity to do so,” Kapanjie said. “We also want to deliver the same dynamic, collaborative, interactive course so students can learn in the environment they’d be in if and when they enroll at Fox.”
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements for the “Quantitative Methods for Business” course, including proctored exams, will earn a certificate of completion. And those who choose to enroll in Fox’s online MBA program after completing the class will also earn a course waiver.
