Today we will be featuring the profile of a faculty member at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management: To Elisa Long, assistant professor in Decisions, Operations & Technology Management, variety is what makes her wake up every day and go to work. “Research and teaching require different skill sets and both keep you really engaged,” she says.
Long grew up in Fridley, Minn., a small town outside of Minneapolis. Despite her small town upbringing, she is now focused a larger picture: the global reality of healthcare operations.
“We are really at a crossroads in this country, with an increasing number of people needing expensive care, and fewer resources to provide it,” she says. “And, I think a great opportunity exists for the medical community to learn more from business leaders about making the process run better.”
Long enjoys the interactivity of the MBA classroom at Anderson and how students can learn from each other and the rest of the faculty. She also loves hearing about ways students integrate what they learn in the classroom in their everyday lives.
“Whether it’s reading a newspaper article with a different perspective, or running a simulation to help decide whether to buy or lease a new car,” she says, “I really love showing students how to think critically about a real-world problem and be able to apply what we learn in class to make better decisions every day.”
