Columbia University Team Wins National MBA Case Competition

An MBA team from Columbia University has won Deloitte LLP’s fourth annual National Case Competition. The four team members, Jane Hendrick, Sara Brown, Will Zvara, and Joseph Saia won a $20,000 scholarship.

Deloitte brought fifteen teams of finalists from several top MBA programs to the Deloitte University campus for learning and leadership development in Texas. The teams analyzed a case involving Firestone & Robertson, a Texas whiskey and bourbon distillery in Fort Worth. The teams had ten hours to determine the opportunities and challenges for Firestone & Robertson’s distillery, and create branding, growth, and marketing recommendations. After their ten hours were up, teams presented their recommendations to a panel of judges. The judging panel included the proprietors of Firestone & Robertson, industry experts, and senior officials from Deloitte.

Mike Canning, a competition judge and the managing director for Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Strategy and Operations Practice said “watching these students tackle a complex problem in a compressed timeframe was incredibly inspiring and gives me all the more confidence in our future and in the business leaders of tomorrow. We congratulate Columbia University and all fifteen of the finalist teams.”

Teams from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management were also honored for their accomplishments during the case competition. The finalists included teams from New York University’s Stern School of Business, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
