DEADLINE: Smith MBA Summer Consulting Project In Sri Lanka

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business and The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), in collaboration with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC)’s USAID funded Facilitating Economic Growth in Sri Lanka program, have announced an exclusive 3-credit Smith Experience for Full-Time MBAs and a Global Studies course for Part-Time MBAs available in Summer 2014.

Selected Full and Part-Time MBA students will have the opportunity to spend 3-weeks from May 17 through June 7, 2014, consulting small businesses from Sri Lanka’s post-conflict Northern and Eastern Provinces that match up based on the student’s field of interest and local needs. Students will work with business owners to create viable business plans and market strategies to accommodate the varied mission of each enterprise.Prior to leaving on their trip, students will participate in a pre-departure orientation with the McKinsey Consulting Model workshop and an Embassy visit in the Spring. At the trip’s conclusion, students will give a return debrief and final presentation event for Smith students, faculty, and staff, and stakeholders from IESC, USAID and the Sri Lankan Embassy.

Student lodging in Sri Lanka will be provided by IESC. Students who are selected for this special session will be required to pay tuition for 3 credits, as well as round-trip airfare. CIBER will open applications to students for $1000 travel scholarships to offset expenses.

Only eight positions are available for this program, and applications will be competitive. Applications opened last Friday, February 7, and are available at www.rhsmith.umd.edu/ciber.  Applications are due by 5:00pm on Monday February 17, 2014 in electronic format to ciber@rhsmith.umd.edu. Interviews will be held for select candidates with CIBER and IESC staff during the week of February 24, 2014 and decision notifications will be made by February 28, 2014.
