Smeal Names Guide Chair of Supply Chain and Information Systems

Penn State University’s Smeal College of Business has appointed V. Daniel R. Guide to serve as the Smeal Chair in Supply Chain and Information Systems. The Smeal Endowed Chairs are given to faculty who display excellence in vision, leadership, and scholarship. The Smeal Chair positions were named after Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal, alumni and benefactors of Smeal who also gave the college its name.

The senior associate dean for research and faculty at Smeal, Russell Barton, said that chairs play an essential role at Penn State Smeal: “Our Smeal Chairs are internationally recognized for their publications, awards, leadership, and the success of their doctoral students. They contribute critically to the national and international reputation and stature of the Smeal College of Business and, more broadly, Penn State.”

Guide has been a faculty member at Smeal since 2002. His research explores design and control of closed-loop supply chains, remanufacturing, product returns, product design, and sustainable operations. In addition to his duties at Smeal, he serves as the co-departmental editor for sustainable operations at the Production and Operations Management journal, and the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Operations Management.

While serving as a Smeal Chair, Guide hopes to give students the same support that he received from members of the Smeal community: ““My colleagues, my doctoral students, the department, and the college have all helped create an environment where I’ve been able to be successful, and I am very grateful. I hope to be able to pay it forward and help mentor the next generation.”

Guide will join a group of Smeal Chairs from different departments at the college, including Charles Cao in Finance, Wayne DeSarbo in Marketing, Steven Huddart in Accounting, and Donald Hambrick in Management and Organization.
