McDonough Dean Honored as Minority Business Leader
The Washington Business Journal has honored David A. Thomas, dean of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, as a 2014 Minority Business Leader of the Year. This is the seventh year The Business Journal has been presenting this award to the region’s top 25 minority business leaders for their professional accomplishments, community leadership, philanthropy, as well as awards and milestones.
“Dean Thomas understands the higher calling of Georgetown University and is leading the business school to meet its destiny as the leading double bottom line graduate institution on the planet,” said Georgetown alumnus Ted Leonsis nominated Thomas for the award. “As an alum, board member, and a parent with a son at the business school, I couldn’t be prouder of him. Hoya Saxa!”
“I am deeply honored to be nominated and selected to receive this award,” said Thomas. “My parents instilled in me very early the importance of education, and the opportunities from that education transformed my life. That’s why I’m so passionate today about creating transformational experiences for our students to enable them to change the word.”
Thomas arrived at McDonough in August 2011. Since he took his posts, he has become an active member of the DC business community, serving as a trustee of the Federal City Council, whose members have demonstrated a commitment to community engagement and a passion for improving the District of Columbia. In addition, at the request of DC Mayor Vincent Gray, Thomas has co-chaired an executive committee comprising the deans of four local business schools to partner with the Mayor’s Office in developing a five-year economic plan for the city. Dean Thomas assigned five MBA students to work with the deans to develop the plan, saving the government more than $1 million, which was the estimate Mayor Gray received from private consulting firms bidding on the project.
