Execs of Carey Based Medical Start Up Awarded $100K

Two Carey Business School’s Global MBA alumni were awarded a $100,000 Maryland Innovation Initiative award from TEDCO, the state’s Technology Development Corporation. CEO Sebastian Seiguer and Director of Marketing Morad Elmi, both of whom graduated from Carey in 2013, now lead emocha Mobile Health Inc.

Based in Baltimore, emocha participated in the Johns Hopkins-backed Dreamit Health Baltimore accelerator program for start-ups held from January to May this year. The emocha technology enables physicians and clinicians to track patient data through smartphone apps.

While working toward their GMBAs at Carey, Seiguer and Elmi teamed up in the program’s Discovery to Market (D2M) experiential learning curriculum, which teaches students to assess the commercial potential of scientific discoveries and technological innovations. Discovery to Market’s mission is to produce future chief innovation officers and informed CEOs who truly understand the complex interplay of science, technology, and innovation to create revolutionary business models for companies around the world.

The emocha technology was initially created by Johns Hopkins scientists in 2008. When Seiguer learned about this technology while working as an analyst in the university’s Technology Transfer office, he and Elmi licensed the core emocha technology from Johns Hopkins.

“We are thrilled to see the founding team of emocha emerge from the D2M experience with such great success in just one year following graduation from the Carey Business School,” Nayoung Louie, a lecturer on the Carey Business School faculty and a program coordinator for Discovery to Market, said. “They were part of our top student team, and it is wonderful to see them apply the same diligence as co-founders.”
