Rutgers Prof’s Book Wins Award
Rutgers Business School professor Nancy DiTomaso’s book The American Non-Dilemma: Racial Inequality without Racism hasreceived the 2014 C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
DiTomaso, who teaches organization management and is also vice dean for faculty and research at Rutgers, was among five finalists whose works were selected from more than 70 nominated books. The award was announced during the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Social Problems on August 15, 2014 in San Francisco.
In her book, DiTomaso examines how people get jobs and reveals that for many, job offers are a result of relationships and networking, which DiTomaso argues create “hidden” forms of racial inequality for blacks and other minority job seekers whose networks are not as well established.
When the book was published last year, it inspired a wave of public discourse on corporate hiring practices and unemployment rates among African-Americans as well as long-standing policy issues like affirmative action. It was also widely covered by the media in articles and opinion pieces appearing publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.
The American Non-Dilemma also was named runner up for the Academy of Management’s George R. Terry Award earlier this month, and it won the American Sociological Association’s Section on Inequality, Poverty and Mobility book award for 2014.
Nancy DiTomaso is Vice Dean for Faculty and Research and Professor of Management and Global Business at Rutgers. Her research specialties include the management of diversity and change, the management of knowledge-based organizations, and the management of scientists and engineers.
