SJU Holds Second Annual Career Expo

Over 2,100 St. John’s students and young alumni met with representatives from nearly 150 prospective employers at the second annual St. John’s University Career Expo and Academic Internship Fair. The fair was held on October 2 at the Taffner Field House on the Queens, NY, campus.

University Career Services organized the event with the support of the College of Professional Studies, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The School of Education, and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Students had the chance to engage with employers across a variety of business sectors. This year, the Career Expo and Academic Internship Fair had its own free app, SJU Career Fair Plus, available on iTunes and Google Play, which listed the organizations in attendance, offered tips on professional attire, and provided an interactive map of the event layout.

JPMorgan Chase, Booking.com, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory were new additions to the expo this year. Judy Courtney, senior director, employer relations, University Career Services, stressed that while hosting new employers is important, another goal is educating students and alumni on how employers offer career opportunities.

This year’s participants included corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Representatives from Target, NBC Universal, Teach for America, and UPS cited St. John’s New York City location as an advantage when recruiting.

Salvador Osegueda, a recruiter from UPS looking to fill paid internship positions in industrial engineering and marketing, explained that SJU students historically have lower attrition rates. “We’re looking for people in New York City with staying power,” he said.  “And that’s what St. John’s University students represent.”
