All faculty, program directors, deans, department chairs, alumni and students of the Robert H. Smith School of Business are encouraged to nominate deserving Smith School faculty members for one of several Krowe Teaching Awards in areas of general excellence.
Allen Krowe, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Maryland in 1954, established the Krowe Excellence in Teaching Awards at the School of Business in 1986 to recognize and promote excellence in teaching to reward innovation in the classroom.
To be eligible, a nominee must fit the following criteria:
- The person must be a member of the Robert H. Smith School of Business faculty or a Smith School instructor. Adjunct faculty and doctoral students are also eligible. (Faculty members from other academic units are not eligible.)
- The person must have taught during one or more of the past three years at the Smith School.
- Nominations are only accepted for teaching that the person has done within the past three years.
Past recipients of the Krowe Award include:
- Ritu Agarwal (DO&IT) This 2012-2013 award recipient was recognized for excellent teaching ratings in various classes including MBA, PhD, EMBA, and Gemstone courses.
- Gary Cohen (LBPP) This 2012-2013 award recipient was recognized for bringing in real world experiences. “He went above and beyond the classroom to help students especially in regards to finding a job or internship.”
- Progyan Basu (AIA) This 2011-2012 award recipient was recognized for his contributions to the undergraduate and EMBA programs. “He genuinely exudes his love for teaching; and he is a great ambassador for the EMBA Program.”
- Michel Wedel (MKT) This 2011-2012 award recipient was recognized for his contribution to the quality of teaching at the Smith School. “He has provided excellent teaching at the MBA and PhD levels and has been an invaluable mentor to students and faculty alike.”
- Louis Gattis (FIN) This 2010-2011 award winner was recognized for integrating current issues and previous experience into the class: “Professor Gattis is able to draw on his practical experience and industry knowledge to better relate difficult concepts.”
- Jeffrey Kudisch (M&O) This 2010-2011 award winner was recognized for providing an engaging and exciting class experience: “I have never been so excited about a class before; I have never been as engaged in a class before; and I have never gotten so much out of a class as with Dr. Kudisch.”
The deadline for submissions is March 2, 2015. Winners will be announced in May 2015.
