Argyros Student Shares Advice for Veterans
Argyros School of Business student Jonathan David Chandler gives advice on the Chapman University blog about education benefits for military members. Chandler explains that there are several common misconceptions about the educational benefits that are available to current and past military members.
Chandler explains that the most common benefit for military members today is the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The GI Bill covers all in-state tuition and fees at public degree granting schools, but in some cases it may not cover all private schools and out-of-state tuition. In order to cover the off set of tuition, the Yellow Ribbon Program was created. Not all schools participate in this Yellow Ribbon Program.
In order to apply for these benefits and find out which schools participate in the program, military members can apply for the benefits and view a list of schools that participate. Chandler recommends that students apply for these schools to get the most out of the educational benefits for veterans. Chandler also recommends that students look in to the Office of Veteran Affairs for the schools that they are applying for. “The Yellow Ribbon Program is not a guarantee and it does not replace the GI Bill. Each university has specific requirements on who will receive the benefit,” Chandler said.
In the blog post, Chandler also gives some information for veterans with disabilities. Chandler explains, that is based off of the totals of 2013, not enough veterans were using benefits they are entitled to. Chandler says that, “perhaps veterans are unaware of their benefits, or maybe their injuries are so severe they believe that they cannot further their education. If that is you, please send this blog along to other veterans because the more educated veterans we have, the better it is for our country and community.”
