Cass Professor’s Work Praised in India

An academic at the Cass Business School in London has had his work received with open arms in India according to a press release sent out by Cass. ManMohan Sodhi, a professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at Cass, recently co-edited a book called Perspectives on India’s Defense Offset Policy. The book supports a popular government initiative called Make In India, a program that encourages companies to manufacture their products in India. The program targets 25 different sectors of India’s economy while also promoting high standards of quality and emphasizing the importance of minimizing the impact of increased manufacturing on the environment.

Published by Sage in April, Perspectives was officially launched by India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar at a Confederation of Indian Industry event that took place in Pune, India. Minister Parrikar praised the book for its nuanced views on India’s defence industry, a lucrative prospect for Western companies that is often seemingly inaccessible due to India’s complicated laws requiring companies to invest in India’s manufacturing to offset sales. Parrikar highlighted the book’s success in articulating the wishes of all of the players in India’s defense industry and stated his hope that Perspectives would continue to inform India’s policy-making regardless of who was in power.

Perspective’s warm reception by the government made Professor Sodhi feel optimistic for the nation’s future: “The book compiles their divergent but sometimes converging views. It is heartening to see Indian government policies changing, possibly as a result of these annual conversations, in the direction that can catalyse Indian manufacturing and in turn all stakeholders themselves.” he said in a press statement.
