Kogod Study Away Course Teaches International Management Practices in Cuba This Fall Semester
Now that decades-long travel ban to Cuba has been lifted, the Kogod School of Business is happy to launch a course on International Management Practices in Havana, Cuba this fall. IBUS 244 provides students the opportunity to experience the management practices and business environments of Cuban organizations. Students will participate in a half semester long pre-departure class, followed by one week of travel to Miami and Cuba during the first week of January. The course is taught by Heather Elms, an Associate Professor of International Business. The travel component of the program consists of a series of meetings with managers and tours of companies across various industry sectors, engaged in interactive follow-up discussions to analyze the state of economic development in Cuba.
Why Cuba? Well that’s easy. Thanks to the ban being lifted, there is renewed interest in establishing productive business relationships between the US and Cuba. According to the Kogod Global Learning page, change is coming and the government expects the economy to grow by 4 percent this year. Businesses from across the world are racing to the Caribbean island to cater to the millions of American tourists expected to travel there soon. Telecom firms and banks are taking steps towards operating in Cuba and should the embargo be fully lifted, it could mean thousands of jobs and millions in revenue for American businesses.
You still have some time if you want to sign up: the program registration deadline is Monday, September 14. Registration for this course is limited, and is first come, first served. The course may fill before the registration deadline. Visit here for more instructions and contact the Office of Global Learning at (202) 885-1940 or email ksbabroad@american.edu with any questions.
