Johns Hopkins Pres. Daniels Presented with Exceptional Leadership Award and $500K Grant

According to Johns Hopkins news blog The Hub, JHU President Ronald Daniels has been named one of the Carnegie Corporation’s Academic Leadership Award winners. As part of the award, a $500,000 grant will be given to the university.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized among the esteemed recipients of this award,” Daniels said. “It is exciting to have the innovative work by our faculty and staff and Johns Hopkins’ commitment to Baltimore recognized by the Carnegie Corporation, a great champion of higher education.”

The grant money will be spent at Daniels discretion and promote his academic priorities. According to his bio page, Daniels has focused his leadership on three overarching themes since taking office in 2009 — enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, individual excellence and community engagement.

Daniels said he will use the money to make Johns Hopkins University more accessible to students from Baltimore City Public Schools. Programs and activities that could help reach this goal include increasing support for low-income students through the Baltimore Scholars program, partnering with local K-8 schools, and investing in new initiatives aimed at college and career preparation.

“This is a truly special moment for President Daniels and the entire Johns Hopkins community,” Jeffrey H. Aronson, chair of the university’s board of trustees, said. “The honor is testament to President Daniels’ leadership, his innovative academic initiatives, and his commitment to deepening Johns Hopkins’ engagement with Baltimore.”

According to the Carnegie Corporation’s website, the award was established in 2005 and recognizes individuals who, in addition to fulfilling their administrative and managerial roles with dedication and creativity, have demonstrated vision and an outstanding commitment to excellence and equity in undergraduate education, the liberal arts, curricular innovation, reform of K-12 education, international engagement, and the promotion of strong links between their institutions and their local communities.
