Ivey Partners with Olympic Athletes for Career Management

When it comes to career management, Western University’s Ivey Business School is an expert. That’s why they’ve partnered with the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to help address Olympic athletes’ concerns about their life after athletics. Many Olympians have questions about what they’re going to do for their career and how they’re going to support themselves financially. That’s why the Game Plan initiative for Canadian Olympians was started.

“Game Plan is designed to provide athletes with the tools and skills needed to transition into formal employment,” according to a press release from Ivey. The program focuses on five critical pieces of the employment process: career management, networking, education, skill development, and mental and physical health.

To kick off the new Game Plan initiative, a Game Plan Summit will be held November 6-7, 2015 in Vancouver. The two-day Summit will allow athletes to participate in different streams focused on career management, brand management, and financial management. Brenda Pearson, Associate Director, MBA Career Management at Ivey will lead two of the session on building personal narratives and interviewing.

The Summit and the Game Plan are a collaboration between the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN), and Sport Canada. The goal is to provide the best career management resources that Canada has to offer, and Ivey Business School is a part of that.

“What Ivey brings to the table is subject matter expertise on career management,” said Irwin-Foulo (Executive Director, Career Management and Corporate Recruiting for Ivey) in a recent press release. “But secondary to that is program design help. A big piece of where we’ve been helping…is to address the question, how can we make this summit cohesive?”

Ivey MBA Career Management is one of the largest and most qualified programs in North America. In fact, according to their website, two in five Ivey MBA graduates will hold a position Director-level or higher upon graduation. Ivey will bring that same success and knowledge to the Game Plan initiative.
