The Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University has recently launched a new resource for students studying energy investment, providing a competitive edge to these students as they enter the careers.
Thanks to a generous alumni gift, the Maguire Energy Institute at SMU Cox has opened the Scott Sheffield Energy Investment Lab on October 16th. This lab will provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience for joining the energy industry. A state-of-the art facility, the new Sheffield lab is located in SMU’s Fincer Building and is dedicated to the advancement of education in energy investment.
The gift was made by alumnus Bryan Sheffield (BBA ‘01), who has dedicated the facility in honor of his father. Serving as founder, president and CEO of Parsley Energy, Bryan Sheffield began his career as a bond trader before following his father’s footsteps in the energy industry. Bryan told his father of his intentions to create an energy investment lab named for him on Father’s Day 2014.
Scott Sheffield expressed his feelings of honor and excitement for his son’s gift. “I always tried to teach my children to give back. This is one of the best gifts a father could ever have.”
The Sheffield Energy Investment Lab will create one-of-a-kind opportunities for students, as until now no investment center in the country has been dedicated solely to energy. Working in the lab, students will have the chance to collaborate in order to make investment decisions, as well as work with several tools specialized for studying energy. The collaborative and analytical work environments they enter in the lab will offer a first-look at similar environments the students will encounter when they enter the workforce.
