Team of Smith School MBAs Win Consulting Competition

The Smith MBA Consulting Club recently hosted the final round of the fourth annual Cognizant Business Consulting Case Competition, which challenged competing teams of students to solve a health care, insurance or IT issue by creating a competitive advantage via “Code Halos.” According to a press release on the Smith School website, a team made up of four MBA students from the Robert H. Smith School of Business developed a health care management solution to win the top prize.

The Smith squad — made up of Fletcher McCraw, Bill Fegan, Gabrielle Kuey and Anna Holland —  presented a predictive patient performance model to Cognizant, a NASDAQ-100 provider of information technology, consulting and business process outsourcing services. The Smith team pitched it model as a tool for hospitals to maximize revenue opportunities associated with at-risk contracts.

Smith went head-to-head with teams representing top business schools like the McDonough School of Business, the Booth School of Business, Stern School of Business and the Tepper School of Business. Leaders from Cognizant judged the completion and awarded the Smith students the $4,000 top prize.

According to McCraw, the Smith team incorporated “a lot of what we learned from the [MBA] program,” including “many concepts we learned through a ‘New Product Development’ class and an NPV (Net Present Value) analysis through Intro to Finance.”
