Zicklin hosts Financial Markets Conference

The Zicklin School of Business will host the Financial Markets Conference on Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to  5:30 p.m. The conference titled, “40 Years of NMS: Who are the Winners and What Have we Learned?” will cover the history and effects of the National Market System. The event will feature the opening address by Thomas Gira, Executive Vice President of Market regulation at FINRA as well as a mid-day address by Nandini Sukumar, CEO of the Word federation of Exchanges.

The event is being sponsored by BATS Exchange, BIDS Trading, Chicago Board Options Exchange, Instinet, Jones Trading, Modern Markets Initiative, NASDAQ, PDQ ATS Inc., Portware and TABB Group. The cost for the event is $595 per attendee. Registration must be completed before the time of the event. Those interested in attending can find the registration for online.

The National Market System was set up as part of the 1975 Congressional Securities Acts Amendments. The amendments changed the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 by removing barriers to competition, creating development of a national securities market system and a national clearance and settlement system, and provide regulation of brokers, dealers and banks trading in municipal securities as well as many other important developments to the country’s market regulations. The National Market System serves as the national system for trading equities in the United States.

The conference will discuss the history of the NMS as well as the Congressional Securities Acts Amendments and how it has impacted the country’s economy and development of new markets. The discussions will open up the ideas of those that are involved in market regulation and how we can determine who the “winners” are in the situation and what the development of the NMS has taught us about regulating markets and the economy.
