Babson Hosts Rocket Pitch Competition For Business Ideas

Before there was “Shark Tank,” there was Rocket Pitch.

The 16th installment of this Babson College pitch competition was held on Nov. 5. Rocket Pitch is open to Babson’s FW Olin School of Business students and alumni, as well as Olin College of Engineering and Wellesley College students, according to Babson’s website.

Rocket Pitch participants get three minutes and three PowerPoint slides to try to sell an audience of students, faculty, entrepreneurs, investors and service providers on their business ideas. The event has a history of producing successful and buzzworthy companies, according to a press release from the school.

Covering this year’s Rocket Pitch for Network World, Bob Brown reported that the presentations “shed light on a new generation of entrepreneurs’ thinking.”

The business ideas presented at Rocket Pitch ranged from AlignmentEdu, a platform to help students choose a college major, to Pet Pal, a robot that picks up dog toys, to Think Board, a film that turns any surface into a dry-erase board.

A networking reception followed the presentations.

Rocket Pitch is just one of the ways that Babson encourages entrepreneurship. Starting today, Babson celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week with events including this year’s induction ceremony for the Academy of Distinguished Entrepreneurs today and an entrepreneurship forum on Friday.

The college also sponsors the Entrepreneurship Research Conference, and is home to the John E. and Alice Butler Venture Accelerator. Since 2008, Babson has honored enterprising graduates with its Alumni Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.
