Scheller Professor Honored As Champion of Ethics at Georgia Tech
Seletha Butler, professor at the Scheller College of Business at Georgia Tech, was recently named as the school’s ‘ethics champion’, celebrating her career and research experience within ethics.
Butler, who graduated from Harvard Law School and worked for 14 years as a lawyer before coming to Scheller, has had a long history of experience with global law, technology and business. After Harvard Law, she worked both as in-house and external counsel for global firms working on mergers and acquisitions.
After many years as a lawyer, Butler chose to apply her experience to business, opting to expand her knowledge by earning a Tech MBA with a global focus. She then accepted a position teaching business law and ethics classes at the Scheller College of Business.
Between classes, Butler continues to focus on research, particularly her work examining boards of directors and corporate governance. Through such research, Butler is able to help companies diversify their board and analyze ethics. According to Butler, such research excites her because she is able to examine both the theoretical ideas and true applications of her findings.
In 2013, Butler was honored with the Scheller College of Business Professor of the Year in elective courses, decided through a student poll. Based on student input, it is apparent that Professor Butler has been successful in her goal to help students gain ethics knowledge in class which they can then apply to the work world. Not only is Butler able to make the study of ethics relevant through speakers and group activities, but she actively works as a mentor to students and collaborator with faculty.
