New Innovation Lab at Gabelli Off to Strong Start
The Innovation Lab at Gabelli School of Business-Fordham University is wrapping up an impressive first semester, according to a press release from the school.
Launched this fall, the Innovation Lab is a think tank where about 60 graduate students and faculty work together on tech-driven ideas. They meet once a week to look for solutions to challenges affecting industries including health care, finance and law.
W. “R.P.” Raghupathi is a professor of information systems at Gabelli. In the school’s press release, he talked about one of the lab’s initial projects: finding a way to rapidly analyze existing drug patents to determine how likely a new one is to be validated.
“Using artificial intelligence techniques makes it possible to analyze data much faster,” he said. “We are building a model that will help us quickly analyze large amounts of text data (from past cases). When done manually, that is a very time-consuming process.” A new process could save time and money in court, he added.
In another project, graduates students are working to find a way to analyze social media posts to identify personality characteristics, which could be useful in job hiring, the Gabelli press release says.
The work at Innovation Lab at Gabelli could turn into longer-term projects, white papers or even startups, according to the school.
“Students develop their skills and their knowledge base in a progressive fashion using the apprentice-associate-fellow model,” Raghupathi said in the press release. “They will showcase their work not only at Fordham, but throughout the New York City professional community.”
