John Delaney Officially Steps Into Role as Kogod Dean

John Delaney

Back in April, we reported that John Delaney had been appointed as the newest dean of the Kogod School of Business. He officially stepped into his new role on July 18, 2016. Delaney was previously employed at the University of Pittsburgh where he was a professor and Dean of the Katz Graduate School of Business from 2006 to 2015.

During his time at Katz, enrollment increased by more than 20 percent. According to an April press release, Delaney’s administrative work led to an annual fundraising increase from $1.7 million annually to an average of $6.2 million per year from FY 2013 to FY 2015, and the school’s $50 million capital campaign goal was surpassed a year ahead of schedule.

“We are thrilled that John Delaney is our new dean,” Ajay Adhikari, Kogod’s Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, said. “Delaney has deep and varied administrative experience, and a record of achievements in transforming business education. He is a visionary leader who is committed to working with Kogod to help us reach our full potential.”

Delaney was recently interviewed by Jamie McCrary of Kogod News in which he discussed a variety of topics. Here are a few excerpts from that interview:

Delaney believes that prioritizing student outcomes means that graduates secure better jobs, which eventually generates more opportunities for their peers. He says that this positively affects employers’ perceptions of the school and elevates Kogod’s reputation as a go-to business school.

“Kogod graduates need to have strong career outcomes when they finish their programs,” Delaney says. “Improving this actually generates stronger long-term results for the school. When you emphasize student success, my experience is everything else that’s good will follow.”

When asked what keeps him motivated, Delaney said “Passion.”

“Working for Kogod isn’t just a job; you’ve got to live it. You have to believe in the school—and yourself—before you can really commit to making this happen.”

Delaney says he is thrilled to help shape students’ futures at Kogod.

“The best part of all of this is that we’re doing it for our students. We get to use our skills to help others and make a difference,” he says. “At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

Delaney has authored or co-authored six books and reports, and with almost 75 articles published in peer reviewed journals. He has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, CBS News, The Financial Times, and National Public Radio and wrote a monthly blog on the Huffington Post.

He holds A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois and a B.S. from LeMoyne College. He has held faculty positions at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, University of Iowa, and Michigan State University where he served as associate dean for MBA Programs.
