UC San Diego Ranked 14th Best Academic University in the World
For the fourth year in a row, UC San Diego was ranked as the fourteenth best university in the world according to the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities. In the US, the University ranked #12.
The rankings were released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Considered one of the most prestigious universities in China, the public research university based its rankings on six objective indicators. Those indicators were:
- Number of alumni with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- Number of staff with Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- Number of highly-cited researchers
- Number of articles published in a journal of Nature and Science
- Number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index
- Per capita academic performance
More than 1,2000 universities were reviewed, and the top 500 universities were ranked and published.
UC San Diego’s Ranking
UC San Diego’s high ranking illustrates the school’s academic prowess. Some of the most recent research advances at the University include:
- The development of a temporary tattoo that measures blood alcohol levels.
- The study of the brain in relation to Parkinson’s disease.
- The creation of a new method to measure and monitor to the warming of the Pacific Ocean.
- The development of a method to monitor brain activity to better understand the human brain.
- The design of a new model to treat Pancreatic Cancer.
Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla spoke about UC San Diego’s high rank in a press release.
“UC San Diego’s culture of innovation, collaboration and risk-taking has once again earned the university global praise as one of the best in the world,” he said. “We are honored to be recognized as a leading university that recruits exceptional scholars and generates quality research that benefits our global society.”
UC San Diego also recently placed 17th on the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) and 35th on the Time Higher Education World Reputation Rankings.
