MetroMBA’s Favorite Chrome Extensions of 2016

Chrome

2017 is almost here, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some more ‘Best Of 2016’ lists worth browsing. Here, we take a look at our favorite Google Chrome browser extensions.

Save To Pocket

Save To Pocket is bookmarking made even easier. Simply add the extension to Chrome and a nifty little button will appear near the search bar, allowing you to save any story both on your computer or smartphone. And with the amount of reading you’re doing in business school, why you haven’t grabbed this sooner is a bit of a mystery.

The extension also has a neatly laid-out suggested article section, giving you endless hours of interesting reading potential.

Google Scholar

Perfect for MBAs, undergrads, students and researchers of any type, the Google Scholar extension makes looking for academic articles better and cleaner than ever. Among the publications used in the free extension are: ACM, Annual Reviews, Blackwell, IEEE, Ingenta, IOP, Nature Publishing Group, Springer, Wiley and more.

Pushbullet

The ultimate in compartmentalizing phone messages and other notifications on your computer, Pushbullet offers convenience unlike many other similar services. Ever catch yourself in the middle of working on a long project only to be bombarded by texts, switching back and forth between typing and texting? Consider that problem solved. And for those who are more proficient typing on a computer than on a phone, it makes responding even faster.

The service has become pretty popular since launching just two years ago, so for those that want the full power of the service there is a “Pro” option, which costs $3.99 per month for one year, or $4.99 for a monthly subscription. Those that opt in get unlimited texting (non-Pro users are limited to 100 per month), 100GB of storage, ability to send files up to 1GB and more.

StayFocused

There’s no sense in hiding it; if you’re on the computer, you’re bound to lose track of what you’re doing. The internet is too alluring (or annoying) not to. If you’re lacking in self-control is this regard, then StayFocused might be the best cure for your delinquency.

StayFocused allows users to enter website that they are prone to waste time on, setting up a rigid time-limit for when the user loses track of time. Those in more dire straights can opt for the “Nuclear Option” and really limit themselves to only a handful of websites.

Boomerang For Gmail

Suspiciously absent from the otherwise excellent Gmail email service on Chrome is the ability to schedule sending out emails. No more prematurely sending out emails without proofreading or delivering to people at weird times on the other side of the world. As well, Boomerang features a helpful reminder feature and can work on both iOS and Android.
