Smith Faculty Lend Their Expertise in Interviews With the Media
Professors from the Robert H. Smith School of Business often serve as experts in the media. Here are a few excerpts of various faculty members sharing their knowledge on a range of business topics.
Managing director of the Office of Global Initiatives Rebecca L. Bellinger penned a Career Coach column in the Washington Post about thriving in a global marketplace. Bellinger lists six skills vital to success, one of which is adaptability:
This means being up for any global adventure, especially at the start of your career. “As you ascend in your career, you might get there in a way you didn’t expect,” said panelist Marc Melkonian, a business development manager for the defense and security business line within Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security and Environmental global business unit. He says his – and other large multinational firms – are looking for people who are flexible. “In large multibillion-dollar companies, you often don’t get to jump in as a project manager. We value people who are highly mobile and willing to go to sometimes remote locations to start their careers.”
Adjunct professor and Dingman Center Advisory Board chair Liz Sara gives startup advice for an event-speaker online service in the Washington Post:
“Before you determine when to the make transition to fully automate the site, you need to make sure you have all the elements for success in your system. The last thing you would want is to have an event planner try to use the automated site and not find speakers they are looking for. They would be unlikely to come back and try the site again.”
