Francisco Veloso Named New Imperial College Business School Dean
This month, Imperial College London named internationally renowned innovation scholar and professor Francisco Veloso as the new Dean of the Business School. Veloso is a prominent expert in innovation and entrepreneurship, where his research—including studies into the development of Silicon Valley—has mainly focused on how corporations and regions develop and use science and technology to promote economic growth.
About Professor Francisco Veloso
Veloso joins the Imperial College Business School from the Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics, where he has served as dean since 2012. His leadership steered Portugal’s leading business school to an international reputation, now ranking among the top 25 business schools in Europe, according to the Financial Times. His time as dean also increased the number of international students and doubled the School’s research presence in top journals.
In addition to his time as dean, Veloso also retains his adjunct appointment at Carnegie Mellon University where he serves as a tenured full professor and a member of the Board of Directors. Veloso was also responsible for overseeing the establishment of a research funding initiative and dual Ph.D. programs between Carnegie Mellon and several Portuguese universities.
His expertise in innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial development has impacted both the Portuguese Government and the European Commissioner through his role as an advisor. In 2008, he was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Industry Studies Fellowships for research on innovation in the auto sector.
“Francisco’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and a global outlook make him the ideal person to head Imperial College Business School through its next stages of aspiration and growth,” said Professor James Stirling, Imperial’s Provost. “His extraordinary leadership at Católica Lisbon saw the school flourish into an institution that is respected across Europe. His foresight and experience will be invaluable. I look forward to working with him to take the Business School from strength to strength.”
Professor Francisco Veloso will officially begin his role as dean on August 1, where he’ll succeed Professor Nelson Phillips, who has been Acting Dean of the Business School since the summer of 2016.
“I am truly honored with this appointment and delighted to join such a world class institution,” said Veloso. “I very much look forward to working with the community of faculty, alumni, students and staff to propel the Business School to even more greatness.”
