BUCO Hosts MCA- USC Marshall Newsroom
The 39th annual meeting of the Management Communication Association (MCA) will take place this week at USC’s Marshall School of Business. The event, which will be hosted by the university’s Department of Business Communication (BUCO), will center around the theme of “Creativity, Integrative Thinking and Storytelling: Present & Future Trends in Management Communication” and will include panel discussions, speakers, and a visit to USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies. MCA, which began in 1978 as a gathering of colleagues from some of the nation’s top MBA programs, has met every year since at campuses throughout the country.
“We live in the age of fast-moving technology that permeates businesses worldwide,” commented BUCO Department Chair and Clinical Business Communication Professor Marion Philadelphia. “At the conference, we will share and debate how we can best ensure student learning, growth and leadership in these soft-skill areas, while utilizing technology to support our communication goals.”

New Institute Seeks to Serve Needs of Global Family Business- Claremont Graduate University Newsroom
The Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University recently welcomed Jamie Richardson, vice president of the White Castle Company, as keynote speaker for the university’s launch of its new Global Family Business Institute. The event welcomed several hundreds of people, both in person and online, to watch Richardson’s speech. In addition to Richardson, speakers included Drucker Dean Jenny Darroch, Andrew Chen (MBA ’10), and Director for Japan and Drucker-Ito Relationships Koji Ogura, among others.
The various speakers and panels during the launch event took on topics unique to the challenges and tools for running a family business. Koji Ogura, who managed his family’s company for many years in Japan, commented on the new institute’s importance: “Our institute is the best place for the next generation of a family business to enhance their skills.”

Fourteen Teams Win More Than $100,000 in Cash and Prizes in UCI New Venture Competition Final Round- UCI Paul Merage Newsroom
The Paul Merage School of Business- University of California, Irvine recently hosted the 2018 New Venture Competition, an annual competition aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. This year, 54 student teams competed, and 14 walked away with cash and prizes worth more than $100,000.
Teams competed in a variety of categories, including life sciences, social enterprise, business products and services, consumer services, and tech surge. A panel of professional entrepreneurs and investors acted as judges, evaluating each teams’ ideas based on their presentation and plan for the business. Other factors considered by the judges also included the likelihood for each team to create a sustainable but competitive advantage, simplicity, believability, and the size and growth rate of each market.
