Inside NYU Stern’s New MS in Quantitative Management
Getting into business from a non-business background always presents a significant learning curve. And while most MBA programs can help candidates no matter the experience, it can still leave you feeling behind.
Luckily, that may not be the case for NYU Stern’s newly launched online Master of Science in Quantitative Management (MSQM) program. Explicitly designed for non-business majors, it helps students grow business fundamentals and analytics, all from the comfort of home. It’s officially marked as the “first and only top-ranked U.S. business school to deliver an MS in Management online,” according to a recent press release.
About the MS in Quantitative Management
“With our track record of innovation and one of the largest faculties of computer and data scientists among business schools, our MS in Quantitative Management program fills a market need,” Raghu Sundaram, Dean of NYU Stern, says.
“Our program targets an entirely new market: early-career professionals without an undergraduate degree in business who are interested in expanding their knowledge of business fundamentals while sharpening their business analytics skills,” explains Kim Corfman, Vice Dean of Online Learning at NYU Stern.
“We’re not talking about programmers or engineers. But we have heard time and again from employers that candidates across industries and functions need to be able to understand and leverage data to inform decision-making. Stern’s MS in Quantitative Management program addresses these needs and prepares students to advance in their careers.”
Master of Science in Quantitative Management Program Details
The MSQM is 20 months long and requires students to complete 22 courses (33 credits). The curriculum covers the full breadth of business with a focus on foundation materials as well as business analytics. Examples of topics include accounting, customer insights, business strategy, finance, data mining, Fintech, predictive analytics, leadership, and more.
Students complete courses one at a time alongside their cohort of classmates. This ensures that they maximize their work-life balance with a minimum of coursework at any given moment.
“NYU Stern’s new Master of Science in Quantitative Management program is primarily designed for early-career non-business majors who are interested in gaining the fundamental business knowledge and high-demand business analytics skills essential for fast-tracking their careers,” says Corfman.
“Knowing how much these working professional students will be balancing, we wanted to ensure the format respects individual schedules and work-life balance. Courses are self-paced within a given week and have weekly assignment due dates. Synchronous sessions are optional and recorded.”
As for who teaches the courses? It’s the same Stern faculty who teach on campus. “We want to give students all over the country and the world access to the same educators, scholars, and business leaders who teach on campus,” Corfman continues.
The flexible program combines online learning with two short residential immersions for face-to-face learning. During these on-campus sessions, students complement their online learning with “intensive interactive coursework at NYU Stern’s Greenwich Village campus.” These sessions help students meet and network with classmates and faculty in the heart of New York City. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience NYU Stern firsthand.
“Convenience and access are both important benefits. NYU Stern respects the many time demands on working professional students and has a long history of designing programs to suit their schedules,” Corfman tells MetroMBA. “The format of the MS in Quantitative Management provides students with a one course at a time focus and flexibility within each week to learn when and where it’s best for them. The program also makes it possible for students everywhere to benefit from an NYU Stern education without relocating.”
For students not ready to pursue an MBA, the MS in Quantitative Management program offers a great chance to enhance their business knowledge. It also presents a possible path to Stern’s top-ranked part-time MBA.
