Northeastern Students Select Julie Hertenstein to Receive Excellence in Teaching Award

Students and a small group of faculty at Northeastern University selected Julie Hertenstein to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award during the Academic Honors Convocation, which took place on April 18 in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.  Hertenstein was one of two Excellence in Teaching award recipients; the other was Rupal Patel, an Associate Professor of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology & Computer and Information Science.

An associate professor of accounting, Hertenstein is described by her students as “brilliant.” Students note her ability to help them “think like managers” through her use of engaging case studies, some of which she has written. Hertenstein’s research and teaching interests cover capacity costs, the relationship between accounting information and the success of new products, and strategies for increasing the effectiveness of cold calling.

Before taking a position at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business (then the College of Business Administration) in 1992, Hertenstein taught at Harvard Business School, Babson and Wellesley. She received her undergraduate degree from Ohio State University and completed her MBA and PhD at Harvard.

Professor Hertenstein currently serves on the editorial boards for the Case Research Journal, Advances in Accounting Education and Business Case Journal and she is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Institute of Management Accountants. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, Hertenstein has consulted for British Petroleum, Bristol Meyers-Squibb and General Electric.

Hertenstein was nominated for this award by her students. Her nomination, along with the nominations of other Northeastern professors, was reviewed by a selection committee comprised of faculty members and undergraduate and graduate student government representatives.  When nominating faculty for this recognition, students are encouraged to consider a professor’s knowledge of his/her subject area as well as the rigor of the coursework, among other things.
