Cameron School of Business Dean Emphasizes the Importance of an MBA

Dr. Beena George, dean of the University of St. Thomas’ Cameron School of Business, recently offered her expertise to the Houston Chronicle regarding the benefits of earning an MBA degree.

According to the dean, an MBA doesn’t just represent a student’s commitment to their field- among other benefits, it can mean an increase in salary and even provide room for self-discovery through the process of professional development.

Additional data from www.allbusinessschools.com reveals further the benefits of obtaining an MBA, such as better signing bonuses, benefits packages, stock options and possible tuition reimbursement from employers.

“A typical graduate program gives you depth in particular disciplines and allows you to learn everything in that particular field,” said Dr. George. “Most have a core program and options to get trained in different areas. It allows you go into that one specific area in depth. It really provides professional development. It’s intensive, but broad. It feeds into self-discovery.”

Additional expertise is offered to the Chronicle from Misty White, assistant director of corporate outreach at the Houston campus at Tulane University. According to Ms. White, an MBA offers the foundation of knowledge necessary to truly understand how business functions. “It’s more broad and able to work in different industries from energy, information technology, marketing and health care. I like to tell people an MBA is a major investment of time and resources. You have to look at the different programs because it’s really about fit and where you want to go with your career.”
