University of Maryland R.H. Smith School of Business

History

In 1921, the University of Maryland Department of Economics and Business Administration offered its first formal business curriculum. In its first year nearly 400 students enrolled, and by 1925 there were 46 faculty members.

Between 1961 and 1972, the school received its first major research grant and inaugurated its doctoral program. In 1997, the College of Business became the Robert H. Smith School of Business, educating men and women to become agents of positive change in the world.

Location

UMD Smith holds evening classes for the part-time MBA Program in the UM BioPark, Building Two, 801 W. Baltimore Street. Part-time students are offered their core courses in one of three locations: Washington D.C., Shady Grove (Rockville), or Baltimore. The D.C. campus offers part-time classes on evenings and weekends. University of Maryland’s full-time MBA classes are held on the College Park, MD campus, which is a short drive (eight miles) or metro ride from Washington, D.C., and about an hour by car from downtown Baltimore. College Park can also be reached by taking either the Metrorail or the Marc train from Baltimore or D.C.

The College Park location is located just 15 miles away from the Reagan Washington National Airport.

Facilities

The Van Munching Hall, opened in 2002 and spanning 103,300 square feet, is the main home of the School of Business. In 2008 the 38,000 square foot North Wing was added to the building. The Hall houses state-of-the-art technology and is one of the largest homes of management education in the world.

There are two Financial Markets Labs in the Smith School of Business. They are formally named the Financial Markets Teaching Theater (3505 VMH), and the Financial Markets Data Center (1318 VMH). There are 32 PC terminals and 64 seats in the Teaching Theater, and 16 PC terminals and 32 seats in the Data Center.

Faculty

UMD Smith employs 170 full-time and 50 part-time faculty members who teach courses across six academic departments: Accounting and Information Assurance; Decision, Operations and Information Technologies; Finance; Logistics, Business and Public Policy; Management and Organization; and Marketing. In addition to holding advanced degrees, many professors at the Robert H. Smith School of Business have gained practical international business expertise through consulting, executive and entrepreneurial experiences.

The University of Maryland typical enrolls 175 full-time MBA students, and 900 students in the part-time MBA programs.
