Leavey School Professor Advises Women Who Aim to Excel in Small Business
Tanya Monsef Bunger, Dean’s Executive Professor at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business, recently contributed her advice to a Huffington Post article about small business ideas for women in 2016.
Bunger said, “I would ask, what are the things you know? … What are you good at? What have you been doing? What brings you joy? And what are the needs in your community?”
Along with other experts in business and strategy, Bunger offered her expertise on how women can best apply their skills in the new economy. One piece of advice is to start a consulting practice, which is especially suited to those who have prior success in the corporate world in such fields as law or marketing. For those with a human resources background, the field of workforce training is a fruitful area to start a small business.
Other advice includes becoming a ‘home management’ expert, meaning offering help to busy professionals in upkeep of their households; and becoming a caretaker for members of the elderly population who need assistance aging in their own homes.
Professor Bunger is an expert in finance, strategy and marketing and has been part of the success and growth of various startups, non-profits and high tech firms. She also serves as chair of the board of the Global Women’s Leadership Network, and is co-founder of the San Francisco Turkish Women’s International Network chapter. She serves as an advisor for the Turkish Women’s Initiative and the Iranian Federated Women’s Club, and is also the program director of the Global Fellows program at Santa Clara University.
