Top Employers In The San Diego Metro
We all know San Diego as a sunny California city where the weather is perfect almost each and every day of the year. But what about the city’s top industries and employers?
According to the California Employment Development Department data for the San Diego/Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area, a total of 1,525,600 people were employed in San Diego’s “Civilian Non-Farm Labor Force.” The largest figure belongs to Professional and Business Services (258,900), followed by government services (211,300), and Leisure & Hospitality (202,000).
In an article on on the San Diego Union Tribune, SANDAG Chief Economist Marney Cox says,
“We keep a close eye on industry clusters because companies within clusters tend to be leaders in technology, research and development funding, patent awards and other key indicators of innovation. They are crucial to helping the region attain and sustain a high standard of living.”

Sharp Healthcare – 18,736 Employees
Sharp HealthCare is a not-for-profit integrated regional health care delivery system that includes four acute-care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, two affiliated medical groups and a health plan in the San Diego metro. Sharp operates 2,100 beds, has approximately 2,600 physicians on medical staffs, more than 1,000 physicians in affiliated medical groups and more than 18,000 employees in San Diego.
Scripps Health – 12,348 Employees
Scripps Health is a nonprofit health care system based in San Diego that includes four hospitals and 19 outpatient facilities, and treats a half-million patients annually. Scripps treats its employees well, offering up to $7,300 per year for tuition reimbursement and scholarships, as well as career coaching. Scripps also enables employees to work dual assignments and transfer to other jobs throughout the system, while also offering onsite childcare, more than 100 fitness weekly classes, five Employee Care Clinics, and 30 days maternity leave to both mothers and fathers.
Qualcomm – 10,300 Employees
Qualcomm is a semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services. Headquartered in San Diego, the company derives most of its revenue from chipmaking and the majority of its profit from patent licensing businesses. The stadium where the San Diego Chargers currently play is also called Qualcomm Stadium.
