Robinson Dean Elected as Board President for American Risk and Insurance Association

Robinson Dean Phillips

Georgia State University – J. Mack Robinson College of Business Dean Richard D. Phillips was recently elected as the president of the board of the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), the premier academic organization focusing on risk management and advancement.

Dean Phillips, who also serves as the professor of Risk Management & Insurance at Robinson, will begin is one-year term as ARIAs president this August. Before taking on his leadership role at Robinson five years ago, Phillips served as chair for the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at the school. In this role, Phillips was responsible for moving the department from a more narrow insurance focus to a broader look at risk. Following his leadership, the department now centers around a deeper understanding of risk, as well as developing strategies for managing the risks faced by organizations, individuals, and society at large.

Throughout his career, Dean Phillips has become an authority on risk management and insurance, producing more than 50 scholarly publications on the topic. He has twice been awarded with the Robert I. Mehr Award for articles deemed to have the greatest impact on insurance economics ten years after their publication.

Since its founding in 1932, the American Risk and Insurance Association has become the “premier academic organization devoted to the study and promotion of knowledge about how more efficient management of risk advances human progress.” The organization is made up of both industry professionals and academics from around the globe working in the fields of insurance, risk management, economics, and finance.
