Stillman MBAs Visit Panama

Recently, a group of seventeen MBA students at Seton Hall University’s Stillman School of Business returned from a trip to Panama. The students were not vacationing in the country: they were taking an international business course called “Doing Business in Panama.” The course was taught by Associate Professor Larry McCarthy, who also serves as the director of Stillman’s Institute for International Business.

The students had the opportunity to learn about many facets of business in Panama during their time in the country. “The business presentations were balanced between economic sectors and fundamental aspects of business such as finance, marketing and supply chain management,” said Miguel Romano, an MBA student studying finance and international business at Stillman and a financial analyst for S&P Dow Jones Indices. “This course offered many intangibles, learning experiences and cross-cultural outlooks, which allowed for a realistic business understanding of Panama and its role in Latin America.

As part of the course, students learned about the economy in Panama from the American Chamber of Commerce of Panama and had the opportunity to explore the culture of Panama. Students also learned about innovative uses of technology from Dell representatives, talked about sustainable economic and social development with Peace Corps representatives, explored the Panamanian banking system with the help of Citibank, and discussed current shipping industry challenges with Maersk.

“As an international business major, this course has strongly enhanced my overall MBA experience,” Romano concluded.
