Katherine Phillips Named Senior Vice Dean of Columbia

Katherine Phillips has been chosen to replace Gita Johar as the senior vice dean of Columbia Business School. Phillips is the Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics at Columbia. Mayer Feldberg Professor of Business Gita Johar’s three year term as senior vice dean ends on June 30, and Phillips will assume her new position on July 1, 2014.

Before working at Columbia Business School, Katherine Phillips was an associate professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She also served as the founder and co-director of Northwestern’s Center on the Science of Diversity. Phillips joined the Columbia Business School faculty in 2011 and quickly became a leader in the community, working with students and faculty members on different cultural and curricular issues.

Phillip’s research as a faculty member at Columbia has direct relevance to the business school community. Phillips studies the relationship between morality and diversity, the intersection of race and gender stereotypes, and the ways in which the homogeneity or diversity of groups affect their processes. Phillips has received several accolades for her research, including recognition from the Gender, Diversity, and Organizations Division of the Academy of Management; the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management; and the International Association of Conflict Management. Phillips has also received the Moss Kanter Excellence in Work-Family Research Award.

Glenn Hubbard, the Dean of Columbia Business School, said “since joining the School, Kathy has become an invaluable member of our faculty. Her efforts as curriculum developer, case writer, and core-course coordinator for the very successful LEAD course have already had a tremendous impact at the School and on our student and faculty culture. She excels in the classroom, earning the respect and admiration of students and colleagues alike. Kathy has also made significant contributions to the Business School and to Columbia University at large through her service on the School’s Core Committee, as coordinator of the Behavioral Research Lab, and on the Provost’s Diversity Committee, as well as by acting as an advisor to several student groups. I look forward to working closely with Kathy in her new role.”
