Darden School of Business – University of Virginia

History

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business was founded in 1955, making it the first graduate business school in the southern United States. Named after former U.S. congressman, Virginia governor, and UVA president Colgate Whitehead Darden Jr., the Darden School of Business was established nearly 150 years after the initial founding of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Location(s)

The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Darden School of Business itself rests in the northwest section of UVA’s campus, right off of U.S. Route 250 and less than 10 miles south of the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport.

Students in the UVA Darden EMBA programs take courses at the school’s Rosslyn headquarters near Washington D.C.

Facilities

Designed by famed architect Robert A. M. Stern, the facilities at the Darden School of Business feature over 340,000 square-feet of space, including 18 classrooms, seven conference rooms, and 60 rooms for learning teams. In addition, Darden features a massive dining hall and multiple apartment complexes for graduate students. However, there are a litany of nearby off-campus options for those attending the business school.

UVA Darden currently employs 73 full-time faculty members.

Student Body

The UVA Darden MBA Class of 2020 features 355 students. Among the class, 38 percent of students are women, 31 percent are international, and 18 percent are U.S. minority students. The average age of the class is 27, the average GMAT score is 718, and the undergraduate GPA of the class is 3.5.

The school’s EMBA class of 2020 features 137 total students, 34 of which are enrolled in the GEMBA program. An estimated 24 percent of UVA EMBA students are female and the average work experience for the current class is 11 years.

MBA Degree Offerings

The Darden School of Business offers a traditional, full-time MBA, an Executive MBA, and a Global Executive MBA. In addition, the school offers 11 dual degree programs, and an MS in Business Analytics.
