Future of the Sports Industry Benefits from FIFA Scandal

In the wake of the FIFA scandal that has been plastering the headlines for the past few months, it’s almost impossible not to think about the future of the sports industry. In May 2015, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that she had conducted a long term investigation into FIFA, which had lead to the uncovering of over $150 million in bribes given to FIFA officials. The bribes uncovered were not only for the bids for the 2018 and 2022 world cup but go back to more than ten years ago.

The United States has indicted 14 people on corruption charges in relation to the FIFA bribes. Nine of those arrested were top FIFA officials. Several of the accused were arrested in Switzerland, near FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich. The prosecutors for this case used the accused’s reliance on American banks and American locations to conduct meetings as the basis for charging them in federal court.

The business of sports is a multinational multi-billion dollar industry. These recent arrests have set a new standard not only for the future of FIFA but for the future of the sports industry. New sports management leaders will have to be more transparent and better educated on business ethics and the business of the sports industry.

According to recent graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management, the school’s missionto develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practiceinfluenced where they chose to attend business school, the experiences they had there and the future path of their careers.

Ricky Ashenfelter knew he wanted a school in a market that had a lot of entrepreneurial ventures, which led him to focus his search on San Francisco and Boston. But more than that, he also wanted a school that valued and would offer coursework tied to energy and sustainability. That narrowed his focus further to MIT Sloan, the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and Stanford Graduate School of Business, he says.

“What I liked most about Sloan was that it was part of a larger MIT ecosystem, which was not the case for many business schools,” Ashenfelter says. UT Arlington Executive MBA Program Structure

The UT Arlington Executive MBA program is a 15-month, 37-credit program with classes held on alternating Fridays and Saturdays. Students also attend a 14-day China trip. Classes start at 1 p.m. on Fridays and end by 8 p.m. (including dinner). Saturday classes begin at 8 a.m. and end by 5 p.m. (breakfast and lunch served). The EMBA program at UT Arlington is AACSB accredited.

Curriculum

Students in the UT Arlington Executive MBA program complete 14 courses over four semesters. Students will complete the program in a cohort structure and gain extensive experience working collaboratively as part of a team. Students who complete this program automatically also complete the Certificate in Asian Business Studies program. The graduate certificate will be shown on their diploma along with the EMBA degree.

Students in the UT Arlington Executive MBA Program focus on the fundamentals of global business in order to become successful business management leaders in global markets. The curriculum is built around the necessary skills and knowledge that are needed to run multinational firms and how to successfully manage data and develop effective teams that will help firms to expand into global markets and maintain customer value and build long-term customer relationships.

UT Arlington Executive MBA students also participate in a two-week immersion trip in China. During the trip, students will learn what they need to know about the global landscape, new emerging international markets and innovative approaches to global product development. Students will also have the opportunity to network with other EMBA students in China as well as develop a project that is specific to Chinese business opportunities.

Class Profile

The average age of students in the Executive MBA program is 38-years old. Students have an average of 16 or more years of professional career experience with ten or more years of management/leadership experience. The average class size of the EMBA program is 20-30 students. Twenty-nine percent of EMBA students are female.

Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Aid

The cost of the UT Arlington Executive MBA program is $75,900. This is the total cost of the program and includes the costs for airfare, hotel and most meals for the 14-day international China immersion trip, orientation, tuition, all course materials, exclusive Career Services Assessment Program, exclusive Asian Business Studies Certificate, lunches and dinners for 15 months, wireless facilities and free secure parking.

Executive MBA students generally pay for the program through employer sponsorship. There is a $10,000 scholarship available for students who pay their tuition deposit by the early application deadline, and a $5,000 scholarship for those who pay their tuition deposit by the preferred application deadline. There are also scholarships available for individuals who work in the nonprofit sector in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Students who work with certain companies within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex may also be eligible for scholarships through UTA’s Affinity Program. Students can also receive federal financial aid to lower the cost of the program. The school also accepts private loans, college access loans, credit cards and participates in the Veterans’ Yellow Ribbon Program. Admissions

Candidates should have a minimum of five years of work experience and two years of management responsibility. Applicants for the UT Arlington Executive MBA Program who hold a bachelor’s degree are not required to take the GMAT.

UT at Arlington MBA

UT Arlington MBA Program Structure

The UT Arlington MBA program is a 36-credit hour program that is offered in both flexible and cohort structures. Students who follow the flexible program structure can choose when to participate in the program. For example, they can decide to start in fall, spring, or summer and can choose to take classes other part-time or full-time. Courses for the program are held on weekday evenings.

The Cohort MBA structure also follows the same 36-credit hour curriculum as the MBA flexible structure. The difference between the two structures is that students in the cohort structure complete classes together in a lock-step format. For example, the cohort structure allows students to complete courses in accelerated five or 10-week sessions, which allows students to complete their MBA in 15 months. Only the Fort Worth campus, however, offers this format. This program begins in the Fall of each year. 

 

Curriculum

Despite the program structure, all students complete the same required 36-credit hour curriculum for both of the UT Arlington MBA options. Students complete 21 credits of core courses and 15 credit hours of electives. Students in the flexible program can choose a concentration area from a selection of 12 options while students in the cohort program  may choose from 2 options; Health Care Administration and Real Estate. UT Arlington MBA students can take courses in different areas or choose to specialize in one area such as accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, operations management, or marketing. Students can use the elective courses to develop business skills and perspectives essential to their career goals and objectives.

Students in the University of North Texas Accelerated Online MBA program can choose a concentration in Marketing, Marketing Analytics, Strategic Management, or Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management, Supply Chain Analytics, Supply Chain Management, and can complete their MBA in as little as 14 months. The program features eight-week courses that have five available start dates. Students complete 12 courses for the program (six-core, three required, two supporting, and one elective). Some students may be required to complete up to 18 additional credits of background courses. Students will complete 24 hours worth of core credits and their elective as well as required and supporting courses that vary by concentration. Students also take a variety of electives based on specific concentrations and background courses. The necessity of background courses is assessed with a review of undergraduate transcripts. Before applying to the University of North Texas Accelerated Online MBA in Strategic Management, prospective students must first apply and be accepted to the UNT Toulouse Graduate School. Applicants can submit their application at applytexas.org.

Applicants should choose “Business Administration, MBA Program at UNT Campus” as well as their desired concentration on the degree plan list, as well as make sure that they have indicated they are interested in the accelerated option.

University of North Texas MBA Program Structure

The University of North Texas G. Brint Ryan College of Business MBA program offers students 14 different MBA specialization options.

Students can earn their MBA degree in such areas as finance, health services management, marketing, organizational behavior, strategic management or business studies. Students completing the MBA in business studies also have the opportunity to complete a concentration in international business, library science and technology, real estate or sustainability.

Students in the University of North Texas MBA program have the option of taking courses on a full-time or part-time basis. UNT recommends that students who work full-time in addition to completing the program should not schedule more than six semester hours (two courses) in a long semester or three semester hours (one course) in a summer session. All students must complete 36 credit hours of coursework to complete the program.

Core courses for the MBA program are also offered online on a varying semester schedule. The courses for the MBA in Finance, MBA in Organizational Behavior, MBA in Marketing, MBA in Marketing Analytics, MBA in Supply Chain Analytics, MBA in Supply Chain Management, and the MBA in Strategic Management are offered to students 100 percent online.

Baylor University Online MBA Program Structure

The Baylor University Online MBA at the Hankamer School of Business is a new program at Baylor. It is an accelerated program that students can usually complete in 12 to 16 months. In other words, students complete 2 courses or 48 credit hours for the program. Each course is worth four credit hours and is completed in seven weeks. Students can complete the program part-time or full-time, depending on the number of courses taken per semester and the student’s schedule.

 

Curriculum

A majority of Baylor online MBA students study business statistics, ethical leadership, manufacturing and service operations, strategic management, marketing or strategic communications. Before they begin the online MBA curriculum, participants are encouraged to complete the business foundation courses provided. These courses cover the foundations of statistics, accounting, economics, finance, and business law, for instance.

 

Baylor Online MBA Class Profile

The average age of an online Baylor MBA student is 34. Students in the online program tend to have more work experience than those in the campus-based program, with most students having at least 11-12 years of experience. Sixty percent of the most recent class identifies as male; meanwhile, thirty-five percent of the class is an underrepresented minority. The program’s scheduling options and accelerated format offer professionals the flexibility of completing their MBA without taking a leave of absence from work. 

 

Career Statistics

After graduating with a Baylor University Online MBA, alumni start with an average salary of $93,982.

 

Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Aid

Ultimately, the cost of the Baylor online MBA is $60,624 for students who don’t have an AACSB-accredited bachelor’s degree in business. It costs roughly $51,264 for those who do have the degree. Students will pay a one-time $50 application fee and a $100 administration fee per term.

Baylor awards Dean’s Scholarships to outstanding applicants each term based on an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above. Dean’s Scholars receive $500 tuition credit per course.

Some students may also be eligible for International Fellows Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to applicants each entering term based on the student’s achievement in undergraduate studies. Eligible students have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25; and they will have at least four years of international managerial experience or US-based management of an international market sector.

Therefore, applicants must provide proof of qualifying international experience to be approved for this scholarship.

The Baylor MBA program reserves Military Scholarships for students who have served in the military, including both active duty and veterans. Students with military scholarships receive $500 tuition credit per course.

 

Admissions at Baylor University

Those applying to the Baylor University online MBA program must have results from either the GMAT or GRE. Students with at least four years of supervisory, management, or leadership experience may be granted GMAT/GRE waivers. There is no minimum GMAT or GRE score requirement. There is no professional work experience requirement for the online MBA program, though most students have at least six years of experience.

In addition, applicants must complete three essays as part of the admissions process. These essays are 200 to 500 words that will give applicants the opportunity to share their qualifications, experiences, and reasons for applying to the online MBA program.

Furthermore, they should provide a current resume that includes professional work experience, accomplishments and skills acquired, including managerial experience.

In conclusion, applicants are required to include personal information before submitting. They should provide contact information for two professional references, transcripts from all degree granting institutions (Baylor alumni do not have to submit transcripts), and TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic scores (for international applicants). Executive MBA

Baylor University Executive MBA Program Structure

The Baylor University Executive MBA degree at the Hankamer School of Business is held in either Austin or Dallas. The Executive MBA program is a 21-month program that begins in August and will be completed over five semesters. Classes for the Dallas EMBA program are held Friday afternoons from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes for the Austin EMBA are held Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Dinner is provided for students during class days.

Both the Dallas and Austin EMBA programs offer the EMBA and the EMBA with Healthcare Specialization. The EMBA program consists of 48 credit hours. The Healthcare Specialization requires 50 credit hours. Courses for the program are taught in a cohort lock-step structure.

Curriculum

Students at both campuses in both the Baylor University Executive MBA and Executive MBA Healthcare Specialization complete the same week-long In-Residence program in Waco to start the program and a second In-Residence program, which is a five-day program held in Washington, DC during the second semester. During the last semester, all students also complete a 10-day international trip.

The Baylor University Executive MBA curriculum focuses on expanding students’ leadership skills. The program curriculum covers decision making, human resource management and global strategic management, as well as contemporary business issues. The EMBA Healthcare curriculum provides students with the necessary knowledge to lead and make executive decisions within the healthcare sector.

Class Profile

About 30 percent of students in the EMBA Dallas program at the Hankamer School of Business are women, with 70 percent male students. Among the class, 40 percent are of U.S. minority status and 70 percent are married. The average amount of work experience is 12 years.

Students in the EMBA Austin program are an average age of 35 with an average of 12 years of professional work experience including at least six years of managerial experience. More than 60 percent of students have an undergraduate degree in business, 31 percent are women and 39 percent are minorities.

Careers

EMBA students are all mid-level executives and come from a variety of industries. Executives come from companies such as Apple Inc., AT&T, Xerox, Wells Fargo, St. Jude Medical Inc., Microsoft, Coca-Cola North America, Wal-Mart, American Airlines and various government offices. The Baylor EMBA program also offers students a variety of ways to network with current students and alumni.

Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Aid

The tuition for the Baylor University Executive MBA in Dallas is $88,000 and $17,600 per semester. The EMBA in Healthcare is the same price. Students are also required to pay a $2,000 non-refundable seat deposit. The EMBA in Austin is slightly less, at $86,000 tuition.

Half of the EMBA students at Hankamer receive full or partial sponsorship from their employers. There are also a variety of federal and private student loans available for students in the Executive MBA program. Baylor does not provide any scholarships for EMBA students but does accept tuition awards from outside scholarships. Veterans may be eligible for financial support with the Executive MBA programs at Baylor.

Admissions

The GMAT or GRE is not required for students applying to the Baylor Executive MBA program. Students are required to have at least five years of professional work experience for this program (five years experience in the healthcare industry is required for all students in the Healthcare Specialization).

To complete the online application for the Baylor Executive MBA program, applicants must first create an online GoBAYLOR Grad account. After completing the account and applicant profile, prospective students can complete the application process.

Students must provide a résumé that includes their work experience and career progression to date, their range of job responsibilities including managerial, supervisory and budgetary experience, their educational background and any activities honors, or awards they have received that would be of interest to the Admissions Committee.

Applicants must also provide the name, title and email address of three references.

Applicants are also required to answer three essay questions (found online). Essays give applicants a chance to provide insight into their motivations for applying and their career aspirations, as well as serving as writing sample for the Admissions Committee to gauge writing proficiency.

UT Dallas Professional MBA Program Structure

The UT Dallas Professional MBA program at the Naveen Jindal School of Business is offered in three different formats. The options include Evening Cohort, Flex and Online.

The Evening Cohort option can be completed in 24 months. This format allows working professionals to take the 30 required classes together, giving them the opportunity to practice working as a team and giving them networking opportunities. The Flex program lets students finish their degree on their own schedule. They can begin in the fall, spring, or summer. Courses are offered online and on campus, and students can choose where and when they will take their courses, as well as how many courses they will take at a time. The Online MBA operates similarly to the Flex MBA, though not all electives and concentrations can be taken online, limiting some of the options available to fully online students.

The Flex and Online MBA programs allow students to work full-time while completing their MBA, and most of them do. A part-time schedule consists of taking two classes each semester, and classes are usually offered Monday-Friday from 4 to 10 p.m.

Curriculum at the UT Dallas Professional MBA

All formats of the UT Dallas Professional MBA program follow a 53-credit curriculum. All students must complete the 32 credits of core classes and 21 credits of elective courses.

MBA students have the ability to complete a concentration in an area such as accounting, business analytics, energy management, finance, healthcare management, IT management, innovation and entrepreneurship, internal audit, international management, leadership in organizations, marketing, real estate, strategic management, supply chain management or systems engineering and management. Concentrations provide students with a more in-depth knowledge of an area of business management. Students can choose their concentration based on their interests and future career goals. However, online students should note that not all concentrations and electives are available in an online format.

Class Profile

The average age of UT Dallas Professional Evening MBA students is 30. Students typically have 4.5 years of professional work experience. The average GMAT score of students is 600 and students have an average undergraduate GPA of 3.4. Thirty-one percent of the most recent class was female.

Careers

The Professional MBA is designed for working business professionals. The PMBA degree will help to prepare students to advance their careers in business and management. While Full-Time MBA students may receive more individualized attention from the Career Management Center, PMBA students still have access to a variety of resources to help them achieve their career goals. Resources include networking events, mock interviews, industry forums and career coaching.

Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Aid for the UT Dallas Professional MBA

Tuition costs for the UT Dallas Professional MBA program at Naveen Jindal depend on the number of courses taken per semester and which track students are enrolled in. UT Dallas has designed their tuition costs to be lower per credit with the more classes that a student takes per semester. The estimated cost for tuition and fees for in-state residents in the Evening PMBA program is $47,842.

The estimated cost for tuition and fees for non-residents and international students is $88,217. Tuition and fees for resident students in the online program are estimated at $55,441, with non-resident tuition at $93,179.

Students participating in online courses must also pay an $80 per semester credit hour distance education fee for each graduate course taken online at JSOM. Resident students enrolled in the Flex option can expect to pay a total of $51,201, while non-residents will pay around $88,939 . These estimated costs do not include costs for materials, housing, transportation, and other fees that students may encounter during their time as a PMBA student.

PMBA students do have access to scholarships, though not as many as full-time students do. The school also accepts third-party scholarships, grants, federal financial aid and veterans’ awards as well as private and government student loans. Admissions

In order to be considered for admission to the Naveen Jindal School of Management, applicants must submit a completed online application and all supporting documents. Supporting documents include official transcripts, GMAT/GRE scores, one professional letter of recommendation from a current or past employer, community leader or former professor, one completed essay question (instructions found on the online application) and a copy of their professional resume.

All international students are required to provide an English proficiency test. Applicants who already have a Ph.D. or US-based MD or JD may request a GMAT/GRE waiver. Only fully-employed applicants will be considered for enrollment.

Domestic applicants must pay a $50 application fee and International applicants must pay a $100 application fee.

After all documents and application forms are received by admissions, applicants may be invited to attend an interview. These admissions interviews are by invitation only.

The Professional Evening Cohort MBA program begins a new class each fall. The Professional Flex MBA and Professional Online MBA programs can be started in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

However, the number of companies that provide students with the financial sponsorship has been decreasing because of hard economic times. Students should also figure out exactly who in the company that they need to contact about sponsorship because it is often times not your direct supervisor.
