Cambridge Judge Announced 15-Member China Advisory Council

Cambridge Judge Business School announced a new 15-member China Advisory Council  in advance of December’s Sanya Forum, a gathering of about 1,000 influential political, business and academic leaders in Sanya, Hainan, China.

The 15-member China Advisory Council (CAC), which was launched at an event hosted by Cambridge Judge at the Sanya Forum on  December 14th, is being established to advise the School on its future engagement in China – a very important area to Cambridge Judge in terms of students, faculty, executive education and academic focus. The new panel includes top executives of leading Chinese firms such as banks and media enterprises, as well as academic, spiritual and business leaders from China and the UK.

Judge Business School Scholar Advises Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund

An expert panel that includes Elroy Dimson, professor of finance and chairman of Cambridge Judge Business School’s Newton Centre for Endowment Asset Management, recommended in a report to Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) that divestment from fossil fuels was not an appropriate strategy for the Fund to follow when addressing the challenge of climate change.

Elroy commented on the matter, saying that “For a fund as large as Norway’s, it is inappropriate to exit from fossil-fuel stocks. With Norway’s muscle, there is more to be gained by engaging with companies, regulators, and governments. That is a big agenda for the Fund.”

Teams from Cambridge Judge’s FinTech Startup Weekend Move Onwards In Global Startup Battle.

Two teams, formed by students from Cambridge Judge Business School and alumni from the wider University, won joint-first prize at the first Cambridge FinTech Startup Weekend last month.

The joint winners – Localvest and SocialInvest – emerged from a three-day intensive event organised by Accelerate Cambridge, Cambridge Judge’s in-house start-up “accelerator”. Winning teams advance to the Europe regional round of the Global Startup Battle.

Separately, a start-up called Just1Thing won the Social Enterprise award at the Cambridge stage of the Global Startup Battle, propelling them to the next stage of the competition.

Cambridge Judge Study Highlights Importance of Innovation in R&D Spending

A new study published at Cambridge Judge’s Centre for Business Research says that a renewed focus on innovative research and development spending by major UK departments would create new export-oriented industries and help re-balance the economy.

In past decades, many vibrant UK technology industries including semiconductors emerged from R&D spending at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and other departments, and future R&D spending should seek to recreate such a pipeline of innovation, says the 65-page report, entitled “Creating markets for things that don’t exist”.

Cambridge Judge’s First FinTech Weekend to Challenge the Big Bank Theory

Accelerate Cambridge, Cambridge Judge Business School’s in-house start-up “accelerator”, is hosting the first ever Cambridge FinTech Startup Weekend between November 21st and 23rd.

This three-day intensive event will bring together finance and innovation entrepreneurs who want to address challenges for banking’s future.

Participants will have 54 hours to test their idea, build a team and pitch to a panel of judges. FinTech weekend will start on Friday, when delegates will have an opportunity to pitch their best ideas and inspire others to join their teams. Then on Saturday, participants will work with their teams and with the support of experienced mentors will validate ideas and build minimal viable product.

Socially-minded Entrepreneurs Selected at Cambridge Judge School Event

A new cohort of 14 ventures with social impact was announced by Social Incubator East, a Cambridge-based organisation, which selected the ventures at a three-day event at Cambridge Judge Business School.

The ventures – which come from a range of fields including genomics, finance and community arts – will receive 12 months of business support, office space and loan finance as they seek to scale up. This support includes training from Cambridge Judge experts aimed at creating viable business plans and securing early customers.
