London Business School Survey Finds Executives Struggle to Identify Chinese Brands

Almost half of business executives struggle to identify leading Chinese brands, according to a survey of more than 1,000 business executives by London Business School’s China Business Forum. The survey found that 45% were unable to correctly identify what Hisense, a leading consumer electronics brand, produces.

Nirmalya Kumar, visiting Professor of Marketing and author of Brand Breakout: How Emerging Market Brands Will Go Global, said: “While western consumers are surrounded by products made in China, Chinese brands are invisible. China hopes Haler and Lenovo are leading the transformation to global brands from China just as Toyota and Sony did for Japan or Samsung and Hyundai did for South Korea.”

Cass EMBA Students Take On Business Challenges in Vietnam

Over 50 Cass Executive MBA students flew out to Vietnam in early September for their International Consultancy Week, during which students apply skills they’ve learned throughout the course to unfamiliar international business environments.

Students spent a week in Hanoi, where they worked together to create improvement recommendations for 11 host Vietnamese companies. These included one of the biggest carton manufacturing companies in North Vietnam, a major wholesaler of agricultural products and food to schools, hospitals and supermarkets, and the country’s premiere luxury fashion retailer.

One project group was challenged with designing training programmes to differentiate products and services for one of Vietnam’s largest bank securities firms, while another helped establish a payroll infrastructure and staff management tools in a not-for-profit social enterprise that teaches employment skills to disadvantaged teenagers.

Judge Business School Signs Memorandum with Chinese Private Equity Firm

The University of Cambridge and China Science & Merchants Capital Management have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote academic links and collaboration between the two institutions over the next three years.

The collaboration was launched at the Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Conference (GIEE) in Shaoshan, China, on 27 September. At the University of Cambridge, the collaboration will be overseen by Hanadi Jabado, Director of Accelerate Cambridge at Cambridge Judge Business School; and Dr. Jo Mills, Deputy Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL) at Cambridge Judge.

Haas School Creates Executive Level Program in Shanghai

The Haas School of Business is providing an executive-level program in Shanghai that presents a Silicon Valley perspective on business, innovation, and leadership topics to top Chinese leaders. The program is taught by Berkeley-Haas faculty, starting May 6, 2014.

This Partnership for China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong and Berkeley-Haas is a three-year pilot program between Berkeley-Haas and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong in Shanghai, according to a memorandum of understanding signed by Berkeley-Haas Dean Rich Lyons and Professor Feng Jun, executive vice president of CELAP.

CELAP is one of three preeminent Chinese government leadership academies and provides international, contemporary leadership development for China’s senior officials. Continue reading…
