Columbia Alum Shares Advice for COOs

Columbia Business School alumnus Alexander Tuff ’03 discusses five key concepts every Chief Operating Officer should know. The article, written by Tuff, was featured in the Alumni Magazine of Columbia Business School. Tuff is the chief operating officer and head of strategy at Winged Keel Group in New York City.

Tuff begins his article with an explanation of how he was determined to acquire the skills necessary to become and efficient leader. After being appointed to his first leadership role as COO of risk at CIT Group, he realized that there was not a lot of information on how to be a successful COO. Only through experience was he able to learn what was necessary to be successful in the role of COO at any company. He explains that there are guiding principles to follow to help ensure success.

Columbia Chief of Staff of Dean’s Office Named

Binu Nair has been named Chief of Staff of the Dean’s Office of Columbia Business School. Nair began her new position at Columbia September 8, 2014. Nair will be responsible for a variety of strategic, administrative and operational functions for the faculty, staff, students, alumni and senior administrators of Columbia Business School. She will also aid both government and community leaders.

Nair will be joining Columbia after spending a year and a half as a strategy and planning consultant at the Fordham University Graduate School of Business in New York. While at Fordham, Nair worked in conjunction with their dean’s office, development office and board of overseers to carry out benchmarking, strategic planning, and development activities.

Over 400 Columbia Students Participate in Ice Bucket Challenge

More than 400 Columbia Business School’s incoming students took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Friday evening at the conclusion of their first week of orientation.

“I thought it was an amazing way of showing support and I love how this community came together to support the ALS community,” Sarah Zilinski ’16 said.

ALS, a fatal neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects more than 30,000 people in the United States, and 5,600 new cases are diagnosed every year. The viral Ice Bucket Challenge is just one part of the fight against the disease.

Columbia Prof Named Direct. of Chazen Institute

Wei Jiang, the Arthur F. Burns Professor of Free and Competitive Enterprise in the Finance and Economics Division, has been appointed Director of the Columbia Business School’s Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business.

Jiang joined Columbia Business School in 2001. Her research focuses on institutional investors. She is a four-time recipient of teaching excellence awards. She is highly involved as a faculty member, having also served on the faculty advisory boards of the Chazen Institute, the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing, and the Richard Paul Richman Center for Business, Law, and Public Policy.

She is also currently the finance area editor of Management Science and associate editor at the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies.

Columbia Offers Finance and Accounting Program

The Executive Education Program at Columbia Business School is offering a Finance and Accounting for the Nonfinancial Executive program. The program will be held September 8, 2014 through September 12, 2014. The program will be held at Columbia University’s campus in New York City.

The program is five days of hands-on, interactive sessions. Finance and Accounting for the Nonfinancial Executive provides attendants with a unique opportunity to deepen expertise of finance and accounting for better management and decision-making capabilities.

The program features sessions on the role of accounting, key concepts of managerial and financial accounting, ratio calculation, and analysis of your company and shareholder value management.
