Lehigh Expo Showcases Students’ Creativity – Lehigh College of Business & Economics Blog
As part of the recent Lehigh University College of Business and Economics School Expo, nearly 600 Lehigh students across all disciplines showcased projects, many of which were “outcomes of capstone courses that leverage intense study in a chosen field.”
One project of note was Danielle’s Buddy, a device developed by eight Lehigh students, including Emily Randolph, ’19 to “locate children with autism who might become lost.” According to the article, the device, which comes equipped with GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth, attaches to “the pants or shoelaces of a child with autism and sends a signal to caretakers if the child wandered from a particular area or became lost.”

New Columbia Business School Study Uncovers Significance of the Mortgage Market as a Barometer in Presidential Elections – Columbia Business School Blog
In a study that has the potential to influence how the American public views “the relationship between the economy and national elections for years to come,” Columbia Business School professor Charles W. Calomiris and Georgetown’s Alexis Antoniades recently published research that finds that the mortgage crisis of 2008 was “five times more impactful on voting behavior than rising unemployment.”
Professor Calomiris writes:
“We all know that Americans vote with their wallets. When times are tough, incumbents are punished at the ballot box, and when America’s economy is thriving, those in the White House are often rewarded. This new research shows us that when it comes to mortgage markets, that’s not necessarily the case.”

Columbia Business School Reveals 2018-19 Essays and Deadlines – MetroMBA
The incoming batch of MBA deadlines and essay questions for the newest class of Columbia Business School grad students has been officially revealed.
For admission during the 2018-19 academic year, students must answer the following questions:
Goal: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters)
Essay #1: Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3-5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long term dream job? (500 words)
Essay #2: How will you take advantage of being “at the very center of business”? CBS urges those undertaking essay number two to watch this video from Dean Glenn Hubbard (250 words).
Essay #3: Please provide an example of a team failure of which you have been a part. If given a second chance, what would you do differently (250 words)?
Optional Essay: What else would you like to tell the Columbia admissions committee? You can use this space to provide your explanation if there any areas of concern in your own academic or personal history. This essay does not need to be traditionally formal and can include bullet points (maximum 500 words).

Would You Like Your Boss to be Fined for Making You Reply to Emails? – NBC News
Lehigh University College of Business and Economics management professor Liuba Belkin’s work was recently cited by NBC News regarding a potential new NYC law that would effectively ban workers from being forced to reply to after-hours emails and other messages. The reason behind the proposed law is that the increasingly common practice in the U.S. is decreasing work-life quality, which was a provincial point of Belin and co-author William J. Becker’s study “Exhausted, but Unable to Disconnect: After-Hours Email, Work-Family Balance and Identification.”
The potential new law would not effectively ban those from sending messages after hours, but being forced to work off-the-clock would be subject to a fine of around $500 for each offense. France, NBC News writes, passed a similar law in 2017 “requiring businesses with 50 or more employees to negotiate after-hours email rules with workers, potentially allowing them to ignore post-work correspondence.”
Human resources manager Steve Wang thinks the lofty comparison to France’s work culture is not as easy in the U.S. The country has stricter labor laws, instituting 35 hour max work weeks, and a law preventing people from working 4.5 hours straight without any breaks, for instance.

Daniel A. D’Aniello speaks on the value of mentorship in driving success – Johnson SOM Blog
Cornell University’s SC Johnson Graduate School of Management recently hosted Carlyle Group co-founder and former Marriot VP of Finance and Development Daniel A. D’Aniello at this year’s Lewis H. Durland Memorial Lecture.
D’Aniello used the talk as an opportunity offer invaluable entrepreneurship, stewardship, and mentorship advice to Johnson students from his distinguished career as co-founder of one of the world’s largest investment firms. He also “emphasized the importance of humility in recognizing one’s errors and understanding how to spend one’s time.” He elaborates:
“Allocate your valuable time to things that are going to scale, grow, and become profitable. Time is your highest opportunity cost.”

Fintech is Disrupting the Disruptors, and We’re Ready For It – Johnson School of Management Blog
S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management MBA candidate Arjun Devgan, ’18, highlighted how FinTech inventions such as cryptocurrencies, peer-to-peer lending, and smart insurance have begun to disrupt a post-PayPal landscape, which at one point disrupted traditional banking.
Devgan writes about two Cornell Tech intensives designed to “equip students to solve business problems in this age of digital transformation:” the digital marketing intensive and the fintech intensive.
“With my background in payments and remittances, the fintech intensive program offered me a launchpad to dive deep into the world of financial technology. Classes such as the Fintech Practicum, Business Models, Cryptocurrencies, and a Field Project with one of Citi Ventures’ portfolio companies offer a great combination of basic theoretical concepts and real-world experiential learning.”

Want People to Fund your Kickstarter Project? Sell Them on Your Reputation First – Binghamton School of Management Blog
Binghamton School of Management associate professor Ali Alper Yayla presented a new paper at the 51st Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, which found that potential Kickstarter backers are more concerned about a producer’s “ethical characteristics than their actual ability to make and deliver the product.” Professor Yayla writes:
“We found that people worry more about the seller’s honesty than whether the seller actually has the ability and knowledge to finish and deliver on the product. People don’t want sellers to just take their money and run. Crowdfunding is interesting because you’re literally buying something that isn’t finished from a person who has never made it before. There are no product reviews, and there are no seller reviews.”

Can Mark Zuckerberg Fix Facebook’s Mess? – Forbes
In Len Sherman’s recent Forbes article “Can Mark Zuckerberg Fix Facebook’s Mess?”, the Columbia Business School executive in residence and adjunct professor noted the company’s seemingly astounding naivety of how much information was secretly (or not so secretly) being scrubbed for use by third party companies like Cambridge Analytica.
“It’s been hard to fathom how a company reputed to be run by one of the world’s most brilliant digirati, could have been so naïve in not recognizing the risks in giving outside developers broad access to Facebook’s user data, so lax in failing to ensure that rogue data in malevolent hands was destroyed before it could be weaponized, and so reluctant to advise users that their personal information was (and still is) floating around cyberspace. In short, what was Mark Zuckerberg thinking?”
Sherman theorizes that part of the issue is Zuckerberg’s sincere overconfidence that technology and innovation can only be used for a greater good, rather than being possibly manipulated by less-than-ideal forces. This, Sherman continues, was all done despite a litany of data that proved Facebook’s nefarious actors and less-than-strict partnerships were actively making the platform less safe year by year.

The Best Business Schools for Landing Top Consulting Jobs

With starting salaries in the $140,000 to $150,000 range and a customary $25,000 signing bonus on top of that, it’s no wonder so many business school students target the prestige consulting firms known as the “MBB”—McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Bain & Company—as their post-MBA landing pads. That $170,000+ annual compensation package can quickly cut any MBA loan debt you may have taken on down to size.
Indeed, management consulting has been one of the most coveted career paths for fresh MBA grads for ages. And though the technology industry has in recent years been stealing some grads from the consulting industry’s traditional slice of the pie, the most recent MBA employment reports reveal that consulting is already making a comeback against tech at certain schools.
The opportunity to work with a range of clients comprised of many of the world’s most celebrated businesses across industries—tech included—is part of the appeal of consulting. In many ways, a top consulting gig allows MBA grads to continue their management education while getting paid for it—and further honing their skills and expertise by helping solve a wide variety of business challenges. And, not for nothing, breaking into the MBB is a highly competitive pursuit—one that almost assures that your colleagues will be smart, driven people you’ll get a lot out of working with.
Finally, where the top consulting firms are choosing to find their talent reflects on the quality of the education those schools’ students are getting. In many ways, the hiring practices of the MBB can serve as a gold star standard of sorts for MBA programs.
Elite Firms Hire Grads from Elite Business Schools
The crème de la crème of leading business school talent has headed toward the top consulting firms for decades—and performed well there—creating a virtuous circle of sorts in which the firms’ appetite for such talent only grows. And while this piece focuses on MBB, we should note that a host of other consulting firms—Deloitte, A.T. Kearney, Accenture, Strategy&, and Oliver Wyman among others—are also highly prized post-MBA destinations.
If you are looking to see which business schools send the greatest percentage of their graduates into consulting overall, don’t miss our September 2017 analysis of leading consulting industry feeder schools. Which schools top the list? And what stands out about how these schools successfully train students for careers in consulting?
Looking at Class of 2016 graduates, the University of Virginia’s Darden School led the pack, with 38 percent of its graduates heading into consulting. Columbia Business School was next, sending 35 percent, followed closely by Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, which sent 33 percent.
The 2017 employment reports, which have been released since our analysis last fall, show some shifts year over year. Darden tied with Emory’s Goizueta School of Business in terms of the percentage of Class of 2017 grads who headed into consulting, with each school sending 34 percent. Close on their heels were Columbia, Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, and Dartmouth’s Tuck School. All four sent 33 percent of their most recent graduating class off to consulting firms.
2 Non-U.S. Schools Lead All Others in Consulting-Bound ’17 MBA Grads
But year after year, one thing remains the same. INSEAD, with campuses in France, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi, beats all leading U.S. business schools when it comes to consulting. INSEAD’s 2016 MBA employment report, detailing employment outcomes for December 2015 and July 2016 INSEAD grads, shows that 46 percent went into consulting. And the most recent figures reveal that almost a full half—49 percent—of the 1,029 students who completed the INSEAD MBA program in December 2016 and July 2017 chose to either enter or return to the consulting field.
We should note here that INSEAD is distinct from many other schools in that it includes sponsored students who are returning to their pre-MBA employers among its hiring stats. This is in contrast to many U.S. schools, where the reported number and percentage of students hired by sector and employer corresponds to those students actively seeking employment, excluding sponsored students. Of the 49 percent of INSEAD 2017 grads headed into consulting, 33 percent were new hires and the remaining 16 percent were returnees.
London Business School (LBS) was the runner-up for the Class of 2017, sending 41 percent of grads into consulting. This was a 6 percentage-point gain over the school’s previous class of MBA graduates. Like INSEAD, LBS’s reported sector designation and top employer information includes sponsored students, only its employment report does not disclose what percentage of the class those returning students represent.
