College of Business Alumni Launch Facial Care Startup
Two alumni from San Francisco State University College of Business have teamed up to launch craftedbeard.com, according to a press release from the school. Hanna Azar, BS Finance ‘12, and Aaron Schulweis, BS Finance ‘12, started the project three years after they parted ways at SFSU. Stillman Center for Entrepreneurial Studies Director Shares Advice for New Entrepreneurs
Susan Scherreik, the director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Stillman School of Business was recently featured in an article by NerdWallet. NerdWallet is a financial publication that is focused on helping people to develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful and educated on financial matters. The article discussed the most common mistakes that new entrepreneurs make and how people can avoid making the same, or similar mistakes.
Scherreik discussed the mistake that new entrepreneurs make when they are too caught up in the idea of what their startup could be. She explains in the article that when people get too “carried away with the idea, the new entrepreneur overlooks how and when he or she can actually execute this idea and turn a profit.” She also explains to readers that “unless the idea can make money, you don’t have a business, just a money pit.”
Vietnamese Delegates Visit Leavey to Explore Tech Possibilities
A group of delegates from Vietnam visited Leavey School of Business in order so they might better understand business practices in Silicon Valley, according to a press release from the school. Juan P. Montermoso, Professor of Practice, hosted the group during their visit due to his first-hand knowledge of Silicon Valley. Montermoso previously worked for Hewlett-Packard for 27 years before teaching at Leavey and is also currently the president of Montermoso Associates, a high-tech consultancy that focuses on helping organizations reach and retain their most profitable clients. Cass MBA Alumnus Shares Success Story
Alberto Lopez, Cass MBA alumnus, was recently welcomed back to the school as a speaker at the “Cass Entrepreneur Stories” event to share his story, according to a press release. Lopez is the founder and CEO of alva, a company that collects and analyzes media data to help predict trends for their clients. Lopez also has the distinction of being the first recipient of the Cass Entrepreneurship Fund, a £10 million venture fund that provides those who receive it with growth equity for their new companies.
Jessica Alba Speaks to Marshall Students
Jessica Alba came to USC Marshall School of Business to discuss with business students and faculty members about entrepreneurship at Bovard Auditorium on Wed., April 15. Alba came to talk about her company, The Honest Company—a purveyor of healthy, non-toxic products for families and households. She launched the business with her business partners Brian Lee and Christopher Gavigan in 2012. She spoke at for the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the USC Speakers Committee, as part of Greif Center co-director David Belasco’s class on the entrepreneurial mindset.
Alba started the company after she couldn’t find any truly non-toxic products for her baby. She decided to make products herself and make them available for customers online. Fueled by her love for her children and certain that other parents would respond as well, she started pitching her idea. She was initially turned down by investors, including Brian Lee.
Herman J. Russell : Remembering an Atlanta Business Icon
It’s strange to think about what portion of our lives will outlive us; what we built that will still be standing after we no longer are. For many of us our list of memorable accomplishments is small, but Herman J. Russell’s legacy faces a different challenge. Which of his numerous accomplishments he will be remembered for is a matter of debate, but one thing that is sure to carry his legacy is his contribution to university programs.
Almost 15 years before his death on November 15 2014, Herman J. Russell made a historic contribution of $4 million to expand entrepreneurship programs at four universities– Clark Atlanta University, J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, Morehouse College and Tuskegee University. This gift was the largest donation by an Africa American to support entrepreneurship studies in U.S. History. Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business is celebrating Black History month in part by honoring Russell and the Entrepreneurship Center he made possible for the school. Continue reading…
