Tips for Getting Employer Sponsorship for Executive MBA
Many Executive MBA programs accept employer sponsorship to cover program costs. However, the number of companies that provide students with the financial sponsorship has been decreasing because of hard economic times. Poets & Quants reported that, “forty-one percent of EMBA students were fully self-funded in 2013, up from 34 percent in 2009” and that “only 24 percent of students received full financial sponsorship.” So how do students seek full or even partial employer sponsorship for Executive MBA programs?
During an Executive MBA webinar at The Wharton School San Francisco, Professor Peter Cappelli, shared advice on receiving sponsorship. Professor Cappelli explains that because employers are offering fewer sponsorship opportunities and less money than previously, it is important for students who are seeking sponsorship to make a solid case for why they deserve to get company sponsorship. Students should also figure out exactly who in the company that they need to contact about sponsorship because it is often times not your direct supervisor. Cappelli explains that students need to find the person “who has the authority to make the decision.”

The Executive MBA program at Temple University’s Fox School of Business has been ranked by no. 1 in the Philadelphia region by The Economist. The Economist has ranked the Fox EMBA program has been ranked no. 1 in the Philadelphia area since 2013.
The Economist ranks programs on two broad measures for these rankings: personal development/educational experience and career development. In order to complete the rankings, schools with EMBA programs were allowed to classify their own programs as EMBA. Programs can be classified as an EMBA program as long as it is a part-time program and enrolled students with significantly more work experience than those who are completing their full-time MBAs.
EMBA Helps Smeal Alum Achieve Success
After being laid off from his job, Tony Pagano decided to invest in his education. Five years later, he had earned his EMBA from the Smeal College of Business at Penn State and founded his own company. Pagano is the founder and CEO of StrataScape Technologies, a next-generation IT service and support firm that is focused on advising, selling and supporting both managed IT services and cloud computing platforms for small and mid-sized companies.
Pagano decided on Smeal because of its diverse student body, experienced faculty and the recognition of a Penn State University degree. “The class was very diverse and spread out with experiences,” Pagano said. “The professors were another big deciding factor. I was so impressed with their knowledge and experiences. The third and maybe the biggest piece, was Penn State’s big networking dimension.”
