Haas Prof Wins Research Competition

Haas School of Business economist David I. Levine and his research team are one of three winners of the Random Controlled Trials competition sponsored by the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy. The win provides the researchers with a $96,000 grant to help conduct a new study, “The Effects of OSHA Inspections: Results from a Natural Field Experiment.”

The research team includes Michael W. Toffel, associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and Matthew S. Johnson, a PhD candidate in the economics department at Boston University. The competition garnered 50 submissions and is designed to select and fund low-cost, randomized controlled trials in areas of high policy importance.

Haas Professors Receive Schwabacher Fellowships

The Haas School of Business Executive Committee has awarded Schwabacher Fellowships to Haas Associate Professor Nicolae Gârleanu and Assistant Professor Yaniv Konchitchki. The Haas Executive Committee is a panel that includes the dean and senior faculty. The fellowship is the highest honor that Haas bestows upon up-and-coming faculty stars. It consists of a small, unrestricted cash award, a research grant, and a modest instructional point credit.

Gârleanu is a member of the faculty’s Finance Group. He joined Berkeley-Haas in 2007 and was awarded the Paul H. Stephens Chair in Applied Investment Analysis in 2011. He has received numerous research awards, including the Journal of Finance Smith Breeden Prize in 2013 and the Review for Financial Studies Barclays Brennan Award in 2012.

New Director at Haas Energy Institute

Haas School of Business – UC Berkeley Professor Severin Borenstein will be stepping down as faculty director of the Energy Institute on June 30. Associate Professor Lucas Davis will assume the role of Faculty Director alongside Professor Catherine Wolfram, who has shared the role with Borenstein since 2009.

“It has been a great run and I’m very proud of what we have built at the Energy Institute, but it’s important that an institution stay fresh and nimble,” Borenstein says. “I’m confidant that Catherine and Lucas bring those qualities to the Energy Institute and that they will be great intellectual leaders of EI.”

Haas Applied Innovation Workshop Series Builds Skills

Haas School of Business – UC Berkeley students learned how to design a conversation that sparks creativity and innovation in Lisa Solomon’s workshop called “Designing Strategic Conversations for Innovation.” The workshop is one of a half-dozen offerings in the Full-time Berkeley MBA Program’s new Applied Innovation Workshop Series.

“It was great to learn how you could build an engaging presentation in a larger retreat setting to help people understand what the problems are,” Kavita Patel, MBA 15, said after attending the workshop led by Solomon, an expert within the intersecting spaces of design, leadership, and innovation.

The Applied Innovation Workshop Series is designed to help students build skills that are not generally offered in the formal curriculum to help them in their job search and post-MBA careers. Haas School Creates Executive Level Program in Shanghai

The Haas School of Business is providing an executive-level program in Shanghai that presents a Silicon Valley perspective on business, innovation, and leadership topics to top Chinese leaders. The program is taught by Berkeley-Haas faculty, starting May 6, 2014.

This Partnership for China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong and Berkeley-Haas is a three-year pilot program between Berkeley-Haas and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong in Shanghai, according to a memorandum of understanding signed by Berkeley-Haas Dean Rich Lyons and Professor Feng Jun, executive vice president of CELAP.

CELAP is one of three preeminent Chinese government leadership academies and provides international, contemporary leadership development for China’s senior officials. Continue reading…
