DePaul MBA Capstone Discussed Inversions
A recent Wall Street Journal article informed the world of the IRS’ new tax rules that crackdown on companies practicing inversion— a tactic corporations employ to use their international residency to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Ronald Graziano, DePaul MBA ’06 and global accounting specialist for Credit Suisse Securities, discussed the possibility of the IRS changing the rules on inversions during an MBA capstone class at the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.
Harvard Holds Health and Life Sciences Challenge
The Harvard Innovation Lab will kick off a competition that will award innovative solutions in the fields of healthcare and the life sciences. The event will be held October 14, 2014.
The Health and Life Sciences Challenge is currently seeking teams of students and affiliates to enter for a chance at the $50 thousand grand prize. This year’s contest features two new focus areas.
HBS Professor’s Research Helps Create Mapping Tool
Research by Michael E. Porter, Harvard’s Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, based at Harvard Business School, has helped to create a new tool used to provide detailed data on the presence of “clusters” and the profiles of regional economies throughout the United States.
It also features a unique listing of initiatives, government agencies, and other entities engaged in cluster-based economic development, enabling public officials, policy makers, businesses, and other organizations to gain actionable insights supporting fact-driven policy decisions that can foster regional economic growth and competitiveness.
Peter Thiel Speaks at HBS
Peter Thiel, who gives $100,000 to young entrepreneurs to forgo college, spent an afternoon in front of a packed house at Harvard Business School. Thiel was at the school to promote his upcoming book “Zero to One.”
Theil is a Co-Founder of PayPal, first outside investor of Facebook, Co-Founder of the Founders Fund and Founder of the Thiel Fellowship.

Winners of HBS Alumni Achievement Award Announced
Harvard Business School has honored five alumni with the 2014 HBS Alumni Achievement Award. The five alumni honored with the award are: Gerald Chertavian MBA 1992, Ashraf M. Dahod MBA1981, Sheila Lirio Marcelo MBA 1998, Jonathan M. Nelson MBA 1983, Wendell P. Weeks MBA 1987.
Gerald Chertavian is the founder and CEO of Year Up. Year Up is a nonprofit that helps economically disadvantaged young adults gain skills for professional careers. Ashraf M. Dahod is the Cofounder, Chairman and CEO, Altiostar Networks, Inc. as well as five other technology-based companies. Sheila Lirio Marcelo is the Founder, Chairwoman and CEO of Care.com.Jonathan M. Nelson is the Founder and CEO, Providence Equity Partners, LLC. Wendell P. Weeks is the Chairman and CEO of Corning Incorporated.
