Jessica Alba Speaks to Marshall Students

Jessica Alba came to USC Marshall School of Business to discuss with business students and faculty members about entrepreneurship at Bovard Auditorium on Wed., April 15. Alba came to talk about her company, The Honest Company—a purveyor of healthy, non-toxic products for families and households. She launched the business with her business partners Brian Lee and Christopher Gavigan in 2012. She spoke at for the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the USC Speakers Committee, as part of Greif Center co-director David Belasco’s class on the entrepreneurial mindset.

Alba started the company after she couldn’t find any truly non-toxic products for her baby. She decided to make products herself and make them available for customers online. Fueled by her love for her children and certain that other parents would respond as well, she started pitching her idea. She was initially turned down by investors, including Brian Lee.

Marshall Wins Charity Comp for Sixth Year in a Row

For the sixth year in a row, the USC Marshall School of Business has placed first at the Stanford Graduate School of Business‘s annual Challenge for Charity competition. The team from Marshall consisted of 220 students. The team raised over $235,000 and completed 5,300 volunteer hours. The winning team is given the Golden Briefcase Award in honor of their efforts. The award is based off of the highest score in total hours volunteered (40 percent of score), money raised (40 percent of score) and performance in sporting events at the Challenge for Charity weekend (20 percent of score).

Challenge for Charity was started 30 years ago at Stanford University. Challenge for Charity is a nonprofit organization with active chapters at eight top business schools on the west coast, including USC, Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley and the University of Washington. Challenge for Charity works to develop leadership in the business field and also commitment to the community and social responsibility. Challenge for Charity is the largest student-run organization at the Marshall School of Business. This year, the Marshall chapter held more than 90 events during the academic year for the organization.

Marshall Launches New Online MBA

The Marshall School of Business announced that it has launched a new online MBA program. The school has partnered with All Campus, a creative agency and enrollment services firm, to help support the program’s launch and future growth. The first class of online MBA students will begin this fall. The unique curriculum for the program is designed specifically for online and not a replica of the in class MBA program put online.

The new program will focus on emerging online business topics such as internet analytics, social media, virtual teams, and entrepreneurial thinking. The course material will incorporate live action cases, interactive exercises and virtual teams. Students will also have the ability to take classes in online programs at other USC schools and enroll in additional online courses from Marshall MS programs in entrepreneurship, marketing and global supply chain management.

Marshall Ranked Top 10 Schools for Vets

The USC Marshall School of Business has been ranked in the top ten of the best business schools for veterans by Military Times. Marshall was ranked as no. 9 among the 75 schools ranked by the publication in its 2015 Best for Vets rankings. This is the third year that the publication has released rankings for business schools.

The Military Times rankings are created based on scores from business schools’ survey responses to both the Business Schools survey and parts of the Colleges survey that were sent out to 150 different schools. The responses were based on what veterans said is important to them as well as on the publication’s own editorial judgment. The publication also factored in Education Department statistics commonly used to track student success and academic quality.
