Stern Teams Win $200K in 2013-2014 Entrepreneurs Challenge

NYU’s most promising innovators were recently awarded a combined $200,000 in start-up cash at the annual $200K Entrepreneurs Challenge, held by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. The three winning teams – composed of students and alumni from across the University – were chosen after pitching their ideas and enduring Q&A by judges from venture capital, technology and design, education and social enterprise sectors.

April 25 marked the culmination of one of the largest and most rigorous venture competitions in the world. More than 200 teams comprising over 500 entrants from 14 schools at NYU competed this year in one of three challenges: New Venture, for those pursuing start-ups in a variety of sectors; Social Venture, for those pursuing both social impact and financial sustainability; and Technology Venture, for those focused on bringing intellectual property developed at NYU to market. NYU Stern Alumnus Named Dean of MBA Students

New York University Stern School of Business has announced that one of its alumni, Conor Grennan, will be appointed as Dean of Students for the MBA Program, effective April 1, 2014. Serving in this position, Grennan will act as liaison between Stern’s administration and the School’s MBA students.

A graduate of Stern’s full-time MBA program in 2010, where he also served as president of the Stern student body in his second year, Grennan is widely known for his New York Times best-selling book “Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal”, published by William Morrow  in 2011.

The book chronicles Grennan’s pre-MBA work as founder and president of Next Generation Nepal, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that has rescued and reconnected with their families approximately 500 trafficked children in post-war Nepal since 2006.  According to the Dean of NYU Stern, Peter Henry, “Conor instantly grasps what we mean when we say we’re in the business of inspiring future leaders to create value in the world because he has transformed our promise into real outcomes in the real world. Conor is a bridge builder who successfully discovers unforeseen opportunities to make a meaningful difference where business, society, culture and people intersect. We are delighted to have one of our own return to Stern in this important administrative capacity to mentor and guide future generations of Stern students.”

In 2014, Grennan was named a recipient of the Unsung Heroes of Compassion, which was awarded to him by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in recognition of his work with the children of Nepal. Grennan will continue to serve as a member of Next Generation Nepal’s Board of Directors.

Former Head of the Bank of England to Join NYU’s Stern School of Business and School of Law

Lord Mervyn King, the former Governor of the Bank of England, will join the faculty of both the business and law schools, starting in the fall 2014 semester. Lord King will be a visiting professor in Stern’s economic department, after stepping down from his 10 year service as head of Bank of England.
NYU President John Sexton announced that “We are delighted that Lord King will be returning to our campus again this fall,” said NYU President John Sexton. “The presence of a leader of his caliber at our University is a measure of the talent that is understood to reside here in our scholars and our students, and of the part NYU plays in the global public discourse on the most important matters of the day.”
Highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of King’s professorship, NYU School of Law Dean Trevor Morrison and Peter Henry, Dean of NYU Stern School of Business, said in a jointly issued statement: “The world’s most pressing problems—and therefore the greatest opportunities to create value for business and society—do not respect disciplinary boundaries. The fields of law and business are no exception. Lord King’s intellectual contributions—from his leadership at the Bank of England to the class he will teach in our law and business program, to his research on the foundations of economic prosperity—draw heavily on insights from both law and business. Our faculty and students will benefit enormously from his experience, and we look forward to welcoming him to Washington Square.”
