Georgetown McDonough Increases Scholarships For Veterans Graduate Programs
Starting in fall 2018, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will increase its funding for veterans enrolled in graduate programs as part of the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program. The increase will provide students with $15,000 per year from Georgetown McDonough (up from $10,000 in previous years), resulting in a total of $30,000 annually thanks to a matching gift from the Department of Veterans.
Discussing the Georgetown scholarships and how it will help veterans at the university, Dean Paul Almeida talked about the burden it eases for those in their community. “By virtue of being in Washington DC, we share a home with many members of the military community seeking to transfer their valuable training and experiences into the business world,” he said. “We are proud to increase our Yellow Ribbon funding for these servicemen and women. Easing their financial access to our programs is one way we can thank them for their service.”
In addition to the increase in funding, which can be used to pay for tuition and fees, Georgetown McDonough also removed the cap on enrollment. Now, an unlimited number of eligible students can benefit from the funding when they attend one of Georgetown McDonough’s eligible graduate programs. Those programs include the following:
- Full-time and Evening MBA
- Executive MBA
- Global Executive MBA
- Executive Masters in Leadership
- A. in International Business and Policy
- S. in Finance
To qualify for the Yellow Ribbon program, veterans must be 100 percent eligible for post-9/11 benefits. They must also not be on active duty or have a spouse on active duty from whom they are receiving transferred benefits. Also, they must be enrolled in a graduate degree program and accumulate more tuition and fees over an academic year than indicated by the post-9/11 private tuition maximum.

McDonough Announces Partnership for Global Fintech Innovation and Education — McDonough News
The McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University has partnered with the Fintech Consortium (FinCon) and announced a collaborative effort on a number of initiatives related to innovation and education in the rapidly growing field.
“Everything from technological advances like fintech or the impacts of globalization is changing the way business operates. Jobs are going to look different than they have in the past,” said Paul Almeida, dean of the McDonough School of Business. “This is why it is important for schools like Georgetown McDonough to ensure our students and alumni gain the right skills, mindsets, and relationships to be successful. This is why our faculty need to be at the forefront of producing thought leadership about these changes. And, this is why we must be innovative in our approaches to changing how and what we teach.”
According to the school, upcoming projects include the development of fintech certificate and degree programs, joint innovation labs, joint research and publication, and the exchange of fintech ecosystem data. FinCon will also invite McDonough faculty and students to take advantage of its global hubs in Singapore and Bahrain for the purposes of research and academic residencies.

Anuj Mehrotra Named Dean of GWSB — GW News & Events
Anuj Mehrotra, a longtime administrator, researcher and faculty member at the University of Miami, will join the George Washington University School of Business this summer as the school’s new dean.
“‘I look forward to working with the school’s world-class faculty, professional staff, alumni, board members and other supporters as we continue to strengthen the school’s programs by anticipating and adapting to the shifting needs of students and the business community,’ Mehrotra said.”
Mehrotra has a track record of innovating MBA programs. At Miami, he led the development and launch of more than 10 new programs, including an online MBA and the Miami Executive MBA for the Americas, among others. He also taught various MBA and EMBA classes at Miami and Carnegie Mellon University.

Alumnus and Podcaster Oscar Zeballos Talks Leveraging Unfair Advantages on Bootstrapping — News at Smith
The Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at the Robert H. Smith School of Business produces its own podcast, Bootstrapped. Hosted by Elana Fine, Executive Director of the Dingman Center, and Joe Bailey, associate research professor at UMD Smith, each episode features interviews with founders, investors, and serial entrepreneurs.
The newest episode of the podcast gets a little meta, as UMD alumnus Oscar Zeballos EMBA 16, co-founder of Podcast Village and executive producer of Bootstrapped, joins the show to discuss the business model behind his podcast company and the future of podcasting.

Georgetown McDonough Student Government Association Launches Research Bites Series
For those wondering why speaking events don’t serve more food, you aren’t alone. At least, it seems the McDonough School of Business Student Government Association (SGA) picked up the idea, launching the Research Bites “lunch-and-learn” series late last month.
The series, running until November 20, and highlights faculty research over five unique events. During each Research Bites session, a different faculty member will give a one-hour presentation about their life in academia and how their research impacts business. Gabe Nelson, MBA ’18, Vice President of curriculum for the SGA, wanted to recruit faculty members who were familiar to the student body. He reached out to professors who taught core classes and had interesting research experiences to drum up interest. Nelson says he hopes the series will “give students valuable insights that can help their careers in tangible ways” and “build faculty-student relationships.”
The first Research Bite took place on September 18 and featured Associate Professor of Strategy Chris Rider. He expanded on the effectiveness of the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which is the league policy that requires all teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching positions. According to the press release, about 50 students attended the first event.
Other faculty members set to participate in the series include:

- Paul Almeida, Dean and William R. Berkley Chair
- Jason Schloetzer, Associate Professor of Accounting
- Allison Koester, Assistant Professor of Accounting
According to McDonough, the MBA SGA serves the student body of Georgetown’s MBA program and is the primary interface between the student body and the faculty and administration. The SGA plans social events and boosts alumni relations, such as Thursday kegs, outings to local sporting events, and fall and spring formals. The SGA is also responsible for major student organization decisions, management of finances, and implementation of new and existing policies or initiatives. One-On-One With New Georgetown McDonough Dean Paul Almeida
On August 1, the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business will welcome a new dean, Paul Almeida. Almeida is the current Deputy Dean of Executive Education and Innovation, as well as a Professor of Strategy and International Studies. When he takes his place as dean, Almeida will also become the William R. Berkley Chair.
In a press release, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia spoke about the appointment: “Throughout his tenure at Georgetown, Paul has exemplified a commitment to principled leadership, instilling a global mindset focused on service to others into each program and project he oversees.
